We've had to wait quite a while, but after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/dreamworks-and-steven-spielberg-sign-distribution-deal-with-univ/">Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg signed up with Universal three years ago</a>, the <i>Jurassic Park Trilogy </i>will finally be available on Blu-ray this fall. All three flicks have been restored and remastered and John Williams' orchestral score will come home in a 7.1 DTS-HD MA encoding. Also included are over two hours of new special features with a six part <i>Return to Jurassic Park </i>documentary focusing on the cast and crew of the films. If that's not enough, there's also a plan for a "Limited Special Edition" with a custom T-Rex statue. No word yet on any pricing info but you can check the press release after the break for the long list of extras and all other details, plus a brand new trailer.<br />

More than four years after it came out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/25/hd-dvd-and-blu-ray-releases-on-june-26th-2007/">on HD DVD</a> <i>The Big Lebowski </i>is finally going to be released in a newly remastered version on Blu-ray August 16th. Universal's packing plenty of extras into this limited edition release, with its usual slew of BD-Live related enhancements plus at 28-page book full of stills and quotes, a picture-in-picture mode with interviews and behind the scenes footage and an integrated trivia game. Viewers can also create custom playlists of the songs in the movie and buy them from iTunes, or watch featurettes like <i>The Dude's Life</i>, <i>The Dude Abides - The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later </i>and more. There's a full list of all the extras in the press release after the break, but no price tag, yet.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/the-big-lebowski-comes-to-blu-ray-in-limited-edition-trim-august/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Big Lebowski comes to Blu-ray in Limited Edition trim August 16th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/24/the-big-lebowski-comes-to-blu-ray-in-limited-edition-trim-august/">The Big Lebowski comes to Blu-ray in Limited Edition trim August 16th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 May 2011 13:22:00 EST. Yet another classic flick finally has a Blu-ray release date now that Sony Pictures has announced <i>Taxi Driver</i> will be released April 5th. There's plenty of extras in store, with the inclusion of a commentary by the director Martin Scorsese and the writer Paul Schrader recorded in 1986 by the Criterion Collection for the Laserdisc, and an exclusive "Script to Screen" feature that scrolls the original script along with stage notes onscreen as the movie plays and points out the differences. Along with a 5.1 audio track, the picture has been remastered in 4K from the original and approved by both the cinematographer and director for this release. It's hard to find anything missing from this release of an iconic film starring Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster, check the press release after the break for all the details.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/taxi-driver-comes-to-blu-ray-for-its-35th-anniversary-april-5th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Taxi Driver comes to Blu-ray for its 35th Anniversary April 5th</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/taxi-driver-comes-to-blu-ray-for-its-35th-anniversary-april-5th/">Taxi Driver comes to Blu-ray for its 35th Anniversary April 5th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 13:47:00 EST. The combination of Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. added up to success in ratings and sales in 2008 with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/thedarkknight/"><em>The Dark Knight</em></a>, and now both return just in time for the holiday season with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/inception/"><em>Inception</em></a>. Already a hit in theaters, viewers have been waiting to get the disc home hoping the dreams still feel just as real. To that end, Warner's released a three disc set with 90 minutes of extras, so does it measure up to our (admittedly lofty) expectations? Check out the rest of our review after the break and find out. (Note: While we try to avoid spoilers, there are a few key ones, if you haven't seen the movie and want to remain untainted, please check the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/reviews/#/software/all/">review card page</a> for our rating only.)<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/">Inception Blu-ray review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/#3642068"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2010/12/inceptionoff10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/#3642069"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2010/12/inceptionoff09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/#3642070"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2010/12/inceptionoff08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/#3642071"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2010/12/inceptionoff07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/inception-blu-ray-review/#3642072"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2010/12/inceptionoff06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/inception-blu-ray-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Inception Blu-ray review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/inception-blu-ray-review/">Inception Blu-ray review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 15:09:00 EST. Calling this thing a "<a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/03/23/oppo-bdp-83-universal-blu-ray-player-first-impressions/">universal Blu-ray player</a>" seems a bit disingenuous (at least compared to models that have <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2008/12/05/denon-prices-dvd-a1udci-universal-blu-ray-player-for-us-market/">used that moniker</a> in the past), but there's no question that Yamaha's latest does a good bit more than simply play back your newest Blu-ray Disc. The BD-A1000 offers 1080p playback via HDMI, component outputs, coaxial / Toslink digital audio ports, an RS-232C control socket and an Ethernet port, but unlike many BD decks, you'll also find a pair of USB ports (one on the front, one on the rear). Moreover, this guy can tune into Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube without any fancy software hacks, and as expected, it'll handle BD-Live and BonusView content as well. Too bad that $699.95 MSRP is bound to scare just about everyone away. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/yamaha-bd-a1000-universal-blu-ray-player/">Yamaha BD-A1000 universal Blu-ray player</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/yamaha-bd-a1000-universal-blu-ray-player/#3526216"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/yamaha-bd-a1000-front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/yamaha-bd-a1000-universal-blu-ray-player/#3526217"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/yamaha-bd-a1000-back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/yamaha-brings-netflix-blockbuster-and-youtube-access-to-bd-a100/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yamaha brings Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube access to BD-A1000 'universal Blu-ray player'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/yamaha-brings-netflix-blockbuster-and-youtube-access-to-bd-a100/">Yamaha brings Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube access to BD-A1000 'universal Blu-ray player'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 15:36:00 EST. Michael Cera fans can smile, as <em>Scott Pilgrim vs. the World</em> is coming to Blu-ray November 9, and appears to be getting the premium treatment with plenty of extras. Check the press release after the break for a full list of the special features exclusive to this Blu-ray, but beware as it's long, with plenty of time dedicated to explaining the story's journey from comic book page to screen. Of course, since it's a Universal disc it's also getting the pocket BLU BD-Live integration that allows remote control and content access from computer or mobile device, and viewers choice of either <em>Tremors </em>or<em> Pitch Black</em> as a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/08/universals-charlie-st-cloud-blu-ray-is-the-next-to-include-bon/">free streaming movie</a> for a short time. Not that many people checked this one out in theaters, but we imagine its video game-style look will fit very well on the HDTV this winter.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-blu-ray-arrives-november-9-with-bon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Blu-ray arrives November 9, with bonus streaming movie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-blu-ray-arrives-november-9-with-bon/">Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Blu-ray arrives November 9, with bonus streaming movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 12:32:00 EST. As excited we are that Zac Efron's summertime flick <i>Charlie St. Cloud</i> is coming to Blu-ray November 9 (and we're <b>really</b> excited) the main reason we're mentioning this one is it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/get-him-to-the-greek-blu-ray-includes-a-free-streaming-copy-o/">second flick by Universal to offer buyers their choice of bonus movies</a> viewable through internet streaming. <i>Lorenzo's Oil</i> and <i>What Dreams May Come</i> (also like the <i>Get Him to the Greek</i> deal because both films have not yet been released on Blu-ray) can stream to viewers TVs via their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-live/">BD-Live</a> connected Blu-ray player or to another device on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/20/universal-bringing-bd-live-integration-to-the-iphone-irony-to-s/">pocketBLU app for iOS</a>, Blackberry, Android, Windows and Macintosh hardware. We're still not sure what to make of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/20/bd-live-lets-the-office-season-six-blu-ray-set-stream-next-seaso/">streaming video as the new big thing for BD-Live</a>, but if these implementations work better than the buggy implementation included on the <i>Wolfman </i>Blu-ray, then free extras are always welcome.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/08/universals-charlie-st-cloud-blu-ray-is-the-next-to-include-bon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Universal's Charlie St. Cloud Blu-ray is the next to include bonus BD-Live movies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/08/universals-charlie-st-cloud-blu-ray-is-the-next-to-include-bon/">Universal's Charlie St. Cloud Blu-ray is the next to include bonus BD-Live movies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 18:39:00 EST. Before it gets to the next set of classics Disney still has to push out these two, and has chosen to reveal more information about Beauty &amp; the Beast and Fantasia's upcoming Blu-ray releases. <i>TheHDRoom </i>points out all the special features on the just announced four-disc (two Blu-ray / two DVD) special edition bringing home Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 November 30, including BD-Live access to Disney's Virtual Vault and the debut of the animated short Destino. As for its other classic that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/29/beauty-and-the-beast-coming-to-blu-ray-october-5/">hits Blu-ray October 5</a>, <i>Stitch Kingdom</i> has linked to a few new videos revealing some of the special features included with the Diamond Edition release. We doubt any parent thought they'd get through the holidays without sliding more cash Disney's way, but just in case, the Fantasia trailer and Beauty &amp; the Beast videos embedded after the break should be quite convincing.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/29/disney-reveals-fantasia-fantasia-2000-blu-ray-pack-beauty-and-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney reveals Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 Blu-ray pack, Beauty &amp; the Beast special features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/29/disney-reveals-fantasia-fantasia-2000-blu-ray-pack-beauty-and-t/">Disney reveals Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 Blu-ray pack, Beauty &amp; the Beast special features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 29 Aug 2010 16:58:00 EST. This week Netgear made a battery of new product announcements related to home entertainment and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=powerline+networking&amp;invocationType=wl-gadget">Powerline networking</a>. On the media side, the NeoTV 550 &amp; 350 HD players look a lot like last year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/netgear-digital-entertainer-elite-interface-hands-on/">Digital Entertainer Elite</a>, minus the 500GB of internal storage and access to VOD services like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=cinema+now&amp;invocationType=wl-gadget">CinemaNow</a>. Both are however capable of playing a robust list of codecs in full HD from a variety of attached sources like USB, eSATA (in the case of the 550) or SD storage, as well as streaming content from UPnP, DLNA or WMP11 networks. The 550 adds in support for external Blu-ray drives and BD-Live too, all for $219, which should appeal any of the poor souls with an unused standalone drive. <br />
<br />
Three new Powerline kits -- AV 200, AV 500, and AV+ 500 -- were also announced to help consumers avoid the pain of stringing Ethernet in every direction. The entry level AV 200 appears to improve on the previous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/27/netgear-and-ds2-s-200mbps-powerline-hd-solution-gets-real/">HDXB101</a> kit by offering the same theoretical 200mbps in addition to push button security enhancements and greener power consumption. The AV 500 kit provides the same and ramps the networking speeds to up to -- you guessed it -- 500mbps, while the "+" version throws in a pass-through filtered AC socket to avoid sacrificing precious outlets. Priced all below $200, every kit will available be by mid November for all the fall home networking your heart could desire. Peep the galleries and PR below for further details. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/">Netgear NeoTV 550 &amp; 350 HD</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/#3303335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/ntv5503-4lft600-1282878078_thumbnail.jpg" alt="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" title="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/#3303340"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/ntv550backhires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" title="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/#3303336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/ntv350-front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="NetGear NeoTV 350 HD" title="NetGear NeoTV 350 HD" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/#3303338"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/ntv350backhires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="NetGear NeoTV 350 HD" title="NetGear NeoTV 350 HD" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-neotv-550-hd/#3303339"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/screen-shot-2010-08-26-at-10.49.05-pm_thumbnail.png" alt="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" title="NetGear NeoTV 550 HD" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/">Netgear Powerline AV 200, AV 500, and AV +500</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/#3303350"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/xavn2001nainwallhires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Powerline AV 200" title="Powerline AV 200" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/#3303352"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/xavb5001naherohires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Powerline AV 500" title="Powerline AV 500" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/#3303353"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/xav5001bottomhires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Powerline AV500 Bottom" title="Powerline AV500 Bottom" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/#3303351"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/xavn20013-4rthires_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Powerline AV 200" title="Powerline AV 200" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/netgear-powerline-av-200-av-500-and-av-500/#3303354"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/xav2001inwall_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Poweline AV200" title="Poweline AV200" /></a></div><br />

Universal's added a new wrinkle to persuade people to buy <i>Get Him to the Greek</i> on Blu-ray -- throw in a copy of an entirely different movie. Sure, during the MTV Video Music Awards we imagined not having to watch Russell Brand was a feature that should be included more often, but we didn't expect to see it tucked in among these other Blu-ray exclusive extras -- karaoke, the Pocket BLU iPhone remote control app, social BLU access, Mobile-To-Go support for taking bonus content with you and keyboard support. Anyone who buys the flick between September 28 and March 31, 2011 can also gain access to one of the following movies streamed to the player over BD-Live or directly to their mobile phone: <i>Uncle Buck</i>,<i> Dazed &amp; Confused</i> or <i>Life</i> (Eddie Murphy &amp; Martin Lawrence, not <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/03/21/poll-watching-life-on-discovery-tonight/">David Attenborough</a>.) The flicks are notable not only because they appear to have been randomly chosen, but also since they're not available on Blu-ray yet. Unlike <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/08/20/bd-live-lets-the-office-season-six-blu-ray-set-stream-next-seaso/"><i>The Office</i></a>, there's no promise of HD resolution here so the quality is still in question, but really, what Blu-ray release couldn't use an extra dose of John Candy? Check out all the details and extras in the press release after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/get-him-to-the-greek-blu-ray-includes-a-free-streaming-copy-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Get Him to the Greek Blu-ray includes a free streaming copy -- of a different movie</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/get-him-to-the-greek-blu-ray-includes-a-free-streaming-copy-o/">Get Him to the Greek Blu-ray includes a free streaming copy -- of a different movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 19:20:00 EST. Universal's list of special features for <em>The Office: Season Six</em> Blu-ray boxed set is pretty standard for its releases -- iPhone remote control, digital shorts, blooper reel etc. -- with the exception of one all-new feature. This time around, when season 7 episodes air on NBC, afterwards users with these discs can stream them, in HD, through their Blu-players via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BDLive/">BD-Live</a>. According to the press release users will have access to "the latest five episodes" but no word on exactly how long the window between them airing on TV and showing up online will be. We'll keep our DVR queue, but if these episodes are truly high quality and commercial free, it's at least a convenient bonus. Perhaps if they bumped it up to allow viewing before the episodes air, then Universal could be onto something, press release and trailer follow after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/20/bd-live-lets-the-office-season-six-blu-ray-set-stream-next-seaso/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BD-Live lets The Office Season Six Blu-ray set stream next season's episodes in HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/20/bd-live-lets-the-office-season-six-blu-ray-set-stream-next-seaso/">BD-Live lets The Office Season Six Blu-ray set stream next season's episodes in HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 14:34:00 EST. The official <i>Rocky Horror Picture Show</i> fan site has announced the cult classic is coming to Blu-ray October 19. Fox is pulling out all the stops for this 35th anniversary edition, with a restored picture courtesy of a new master from the original negatives, 7.1 audio and a wealth of special features meant to give "The Midnight Experience." Just to make sure the die-hard fans are in line day 1 to purchase, for a "limited time" it's also tossing in a 24-page book of photos taken by chief photographer Mick Rock. Outside of actually dressing up and hitting a midnight showing, with the preorder price already down to $18.49 on Amazon, we wouldn't suggest enjoying Tim Curry's transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania any other way.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/03/the-rocky-horror-picture-show-brings-the-midnight-experience-to/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Rocky Horror Picture Show brings The Midnight Experience to Blu-ray October 19</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/03/the-rocky-horror-picture-show-brings-the-midnight-experience-to/">The Rocky Horror Picture Show brings The Midnight Experience to Blu-ray October 19</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:18:00 EST. <em>Kick-Ass</em> comes to Blu-ray next week, and it seems Lionsgate has been dropping clips of the special features all over the web in preparation for its release. Not surprisingly for a studio with a rep for pushing the technological limits, it has plenty of Blu-ray exclusives planned, including "Ass Kicking Bonus View Mode" to draw together commentary, background footage and graphics along with the movie, and the "A New Kind of Superhero: The Making of Kick-Ass" documentary. Check out the most recent clip from <em>MovieWeb</em> embedded after the break, along with a few others <em>TheHDRoom</em> has found floating around the net, and check out the movie when it's released August 3.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/30/clips-from-kick-ass-blu-ray-show-off-exclusive-special-features/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Clips from Kick-Ass Blu-ray show off exclusive special features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/30/clips-from-kick-ass-blu-ray-show-off-exclusive-special-features/">Clips from Kick-Ass Blu-ray show off exclusive special features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 14:57:00 EST. Normally, if asked to choose between living with or without gimmicky <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/will-bd-live-finally-shine-in-2009/">BD-Live</a> enabled bonus features, we'd pick the latter. Musical preferences aside though, U2's use of the technology on their 360 Tour Blu-ray to share select performances from their 2011 tour is just the kind of cool use case we've been looking for. According to the disc's production company, it was also cheap to implement -- think less than a pair of Bono's sunglasses. That happens to fly directly in the face of arguments made by other studios who cite BD-Live's costs as the main reason for its limited integrations to date. So while we never thought the day would come, it looks like the same minds behind the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=u2+ipod&amp;invocationType=wl-gadget">special edition iPod</a> have set a new precedent -- mainly that studios shouldn't get away with all that they leave behind. That's right you heard us movie companies, we want more free future content on discs -- and while you're up get us some Goobers too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/u2-360-tour-blu-ray-actually-makes-compelling-use-of-bd-live/">U2 360° Tour Blu-ray actually makes compelling use of BD-Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 12:33:00 EST. It's been an under the radar race to 500, but that's how many Blu-ray discs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=imagion">Imagion AG</a> has put together using its dynamicHD BD-Live platform. Many of those are international releases, although their work on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/star-trek-csi-blu-ray-boxed-sets-doing-bd-live-right-w/">CSI and Star Trek:TOS</a> hits closer to home, and now the company is partnering with Giant Interactive to work on more BD-Live discs in the U.S under the BD-Connect name. We're still holding out hope BD-Live lives up to its promise and brings many worthwhile new experiences to Blu-ray discs, are we the only ones? Hello? Anyone?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/11/imagion-ag-hits-500-bd-live-movies-authored-plans-more-u-s-blu/">Imagion AG hits 500 BD-Live movies authored, plans more U.S. Blu-ray releases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 16:25:00 EST. The other new feature is the ability to create &amp; share customized playlists of the songs featured in the flick. We've been waiting for an event that would <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/05/11/sony-pictures-responds-to-your-poll-results-discusses-the-futur/">change</a> both the reality and <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/05/02/poll-have-you-been-impressed-by-bd-live/">perception</a> of internet connected features on Blu-ray -- and there's still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/09/blu-tv-brings-interactive-iptv-to-disc-players-starting-with-th/">some</a> hope -- but this probably <i>isn't</i> it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/10/this-is-it-blu-ray-release-debuts-movieiq-sync-brings-more-mich/">This is It Blu-ray release debuts movieIQ Sync, brings more Michael Jackson info to your iPhone or PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 12:06:00 EST. Dreamer has finally found a partner in its <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/dreamer">Blu-ray powered IPTV fantasy</a> now that Blu-TV has debuted on the <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/bdp-83">OPPO BDP-83</a>. As the company envisions it, once loaded, it turns your BD-Live capable Blu-ray player into a video and interactive content gateway anyone can develop apps for once the SDK is released. Already powering an IPTV service in Korea, we got a quick demo of the software running on a PS3 in Dreamer's CES booth and flipped through a quick selection of online marketplaces, simple games and video services. We're not sure how many manufacturers will warm to the idea of opening up players currently limited to their choice of streaming services, but if the apps start to flow, having this as an embedded option could be a differentiating feature as player prices dive.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/09/blu-tv-brings-interactive-iptv-to-disc-players-starting-with-th/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Blu-TV brings interactive IPTV to disc players, starting with the BDP-83</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/09/blu-tv-brings-interactive-iptv-to-disc-players-starting-with-th/">Blu-TV brings interactive IPTV to disc players, starting with the BDP-83</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 14:57:00 EST. One of the main problems with initial Blu-ray director's chat sessions was a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/24/hellboy-ii-bd-live-directors-chat-event-recap/">lack of feeling any life or interactivity</a>, but Warner gave it another shot this weekend by offering audio over BD-Live as a moderator bounced audience provided questions off of director McG while watching <i>Terminator: Salvation</i>. Despite a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/02/poll-have-you-been-impressed-by-bd-live/">less than stellar reputation</a>, BD-Live has continued to slowly creep along, adding features and enhancements, so we wanted to if this event bodes well for the future of internet enabled discs. Check after the break for our impressions, plus a few clips of the director talking about what he did and didn't like about the finished product, director's cuts in general, and the possibility of doing another <i>Terminator </i>movie.<br />

Everything's set to go off at 9 p.m. est, with only a copy of the movie, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-live">BD-Live</a> connected player, registration on Warner's website and an appetite for yet another sequel in an action movie franchise that topped out two movies and almost as many decades ago. A chance to see if Blu-ray's interactive potential can ever pay off means we're in, interested parties can sign up at the read link below, if you can't make it check back later, we'll try and grab some audio.<br />

<strong>Update</strong>: Well, we're logged in and ready to go, we'll save you our 30 seconds of confusion and remind that you'll need to insert the director's cut disc to access the BD-Live menu. Feel free to add "Rjcc" as a buddy on Warner's BD-Live setup.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/05/terminator-salvations-mcg-hosts-the-first-audio-blu-ray-direct/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Terminator: Salvation's McG hosts the first audio Blu-ray director's chat session tonight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/05/terminator-salvations-mcg-hosts-the-first-audio-blu-ray-direct/">Terminator: Salvation's McG hosts the first audio Blu-ray director's chat session tonight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 05 Dec 2009 15:52:00 EST. The good news is the picture doesn't disappoint, with a clear transfer and elaborate special effects, although<em> BigPictureBigSound</em>'s reviewer found a few issues with a bluish matte line appearing at times, plus a few notes about compression and noise in clouds of dust and smoke also noted in other reviews. On the audio front, the DTS-HD MA soundtrack by all accounts is an impressive treatment, with the only "problem" that viewers might want to dial back slightly on the bass to avoid waking the neighbors. Of the extras included in the U.S. release of the film, the only real issue seems to be a lack of seamless branching, requiring viewers to forego the Director's Cut and its extra few minutes of Moon Bloodgood in order to walk through the flick in Maximum Movie mode with director McG and others showing how they pulled off many of the shots. The European edition released by Sony does feature seamless branching, although <em>CNET</em><em> UK</em> and <em>DVD Times</em> both complained of slow loads and glitches on their players as a result, with the latter also finding some possible compression issues from being squeezed on one disc. Whatever your choice, check the reviews and make it soon as Warner is planning a one time only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/directorschat">BD-Live community screening with the director</a> answering questions via audio December 5.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/25/terminator-salvation-blu-ray-review-roundup/">Terminator: Salvation Blu-ray review roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 15:37:00 EST. We'll say it right up front -- BD-Live <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/02/poll-have-you-been-impressed-by-bd-live/">hasn't impressed</a> early, but we're not going to give up on it altogether. For the most part, it has underwhelmed because of uninspired implementation, not the technology itself. While we skip right by most BD-Live features, however, consumers are connecting their decks to the cloud some 4-million times each month to grab up freebies, according to Deluxe Digital Studios. What's the most popular kind of feature that users are getting their hands on? Trailers, of course -- reinforcing our "uninspired" comment. The linked post at Video Business hints at exciting new BD-Live developments like social networking and hooking into <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/20/universal-bringing-bd-live-integration-to-the-iphone-irony-to-s/">mobile devices</a>, and we'd like to see some of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/videociety-vod-service-uses-blu-ray-player-with-bd-live/">these</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/biddle">ideas</a> get traction. But our advice is that if Hollywood doesn't "... want people to feel like they are being marketed to," then just don't market to them. Crazy talk, we know, but share your crazy ideas below.<br />

Be prepared for bad news like a lack of high definition cables included in the $178 package, though coax and optical audio outputs plus the too often-forgotten rear mounted USB port are welcome bonuses. Still avoiding the potential trampling issue at Wal-mart? With <em>Angels &amp; Demons</em> still without a U.S. release date (September 14 in the U.K.) and <em>Easy Rider</em> set to debut September 15, there's a possibility Sony Pictures new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-live">BD-Live</a> powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/">movieIQ</a> feature could find its debut on a pair of western movies: <em>The Quick and the Dead</em> &amp; <em>Silverado</em>. Both are set to hit the streets September 8, while Silverado promises a never-before-seen featurette sure to interest fans in this collector's edition, neither is quite The Man with No Name-series material or packing other notable Blu-ray exclusives beyond movieIQ. Still, it's interesting to see Sony pitching connected features to these audiences, looks like we should expect movieIQ on most titles from here on out.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/">BD-Live MovieIQ</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2093000"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-08-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2093001"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-10-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092990"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-34-48-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092991"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-34-58-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092992"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-15-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/03/sonys-movieiq-bd-live-feature-attached-to-silverado-the-quick/">Sony's movieIQ BD-Live feature attached to Silverado, The Quick and the Dead Blu-ray discs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Aug 2009 11:56:00 EST. We finally got a peek at the new BD-Live capable Blu-ray player from Marantz a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/15/marantz-ud9004-sacd-blu-ray-player-combo-priced-and-dated/">couple of weeks ago</a>, but you should be able to take a peek at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/20/marantz-unveils-high-end-ud9004-blu-ray-sacd-player/">UD9004</a> yourself, as it began shipping today. For a cool six grand, give or take, the all in one CD, SACD, DVD Audi and Blu-ray playing beast can be yours, complete with internal HD audio decoding, Silicon Optix Realta chipset, 7.1 analog outputs and more. Check out all the specs and details in the press release after the break, though we suspect many of you are wondering just how many Oppo BDP-83 players that $5,999 MSRP could buy.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/31/marantz-6k-ud9004-blu-ray-player-now-shipping/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marantz $6K UD9004 Blu-ray player now shipping</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/players/" rel="tag">Players</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/31/marantz-6k-ud9004-blu-ray-player-now-shipping/">Marantz $6K UD9004 Blu-ray player now shipping</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 21:11:00 EST. Looks like Sony isn't the only one ready to take a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/">crack at improving BD-Live,</a> Fox has revealed its "Live Lookup" feature, that will pull info from IMDB.com related to the movie being watched, slated to appear first on the <em>Wolverine </em>Blu-ray. Besides an internet hookup, <em>Wolverine </em>will bring a 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack, a digital copy and several Blu-ray exclusive featurettes when it is released September 15. Onkyo's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/10/onkyo-finally-launches-599-dv-bd606p-pro-blu-ray-player/">never been one</a> to dabble in the Blu-ray bargain basement, but with BD decks selling for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/wal-mart-rolls-back-cheap-blu-ray-player-price-to-98/">well under</a> the $200 mark, we're wondering what kind of secret sauce is boxed in with the DV-BD507. The outfit's latest Profile 2.0 player doesn't sound too special based on specs alone, as it supports HDMI 1.3a, 1080p output, BD-Live functionality and BonusView features just like every other respectable rival on the market already. Sure, we can't say we don't appreciate its innate ability to process AVCHD files stored on SD / SDHC cards or toasted DVDs, but even on a good day we can't justify the $449 MSRP. Maybe it's upgradable to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3d">3D</a>... or something. When we first got our <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/04/sony-shows-off-prototype-400-disc-blu-ray-mega-changer/">hands-on the 400 disc MegaChanger</a> pictured above we'd hoped it would be out a little earlier; but never the less the wait is almost over as Sony officially announced plans to release the BDP-CX7000ES in August, for the hard to swallow price of $1,900 -- about <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/21/sonys-400-disc-bdp-cx7000es-blu-ray-mega-changer-reportedly-com/">$400 less than rumored</a>. The good news is that it does just about everything we can think of, like handle any Blu-ray Disc, DVD or CD with ease, and of course works with the latest codecs delivered via <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/.../lpcm-is-not-always-equal-to-bitstream/">bitstream or LPCM</a>. Now if you just have to have a Blu-ray changer, but wish it was half the price, you can wait a few more months for the BDP-CX960 for $800. You will however have to be willing to forgo things like RS-232 and IR-in, as well as the ES badge. Also shipping in August with the ES MegaChanger is the BDP-S1000ES. This standalone Blu-ray player is at the top of line and for $700 you get just about every feature and spec Blu-ray has to offer, as well as built-in WiFi and a DLNA client. The full details of all three are in the release after the jump. <br /><br />

Although Apple still hasn't managed to achieve feature parity with any of its competitors by enabling <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/apple,blu-ray">Blu-ray playback in OS X</a>, it looks like Universal's bringing the mountain to the Mac -- or at least the iPhone. At first, the upcoming special edition of <em>Fast and Furious</em> will feature integration with a special iPhone / iPod touch app that'll allow viewers to control 360-degree models of the cars in the "Virtual Car Garage," but later Universal releases will feature the ability to control movie playback, read annotations while watching your flick, and even download ancillary video content for later playback on the go. We questioned the strategy of Marantz delivering a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/24/marantz-intros-799-profile-1-1-bd7003-blu-ray-player/">nearly $800 Bonus View Blu-ray player</a> last fall, but it appears ready to settle things with customers who believe in its superior construction and components and want a few newer features (though access to streaming movie services is still missing) with two BD-Live compatible players on the way in August. Both support AVCHD, DivX, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD bitstreaming and more, with the BD7004 adding 7.1 analog outs, internal TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoding, an Anchor Bay Reference Series video processor and additional reinforcement against vibrations. Look for the BD5004 (pictured above) for $549 and the BD7004 at $799. In the interests of matching equipment, announced along with the BD7004 in Japan is the 7.1 channel NR1501 amplifier due this month, supporting the latest HD audio formats in a 105mm x 367mm deep resin and fiber reinforced design for &yen;60,000 ($635), check for additional pictures after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/15/marantz-preps-bd5004-bd7004-blu-ray-players-nr1501-amplifier-f/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marantz preps BD5004, BD7004 Blu-ray players, NR1501 amplifier for launch</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/players/" rel="tag">Players</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/15/marantz-preps-bd5004-bd7004-blu-ray-players-nr1501-amplifier-f/">Marantz preps BD5004, BD7004 Blu-ray players, NR1501 amplifier for launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 19:49:00 EST. Hopefully able to do a better job of creating a live experience for home viewers than our experience with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/24/hellboy-ii-bd-live-directors-chat-event-recap/"><em>Hellboy II: The Golden Army</em></a> or <em>The Dark Knight</em>, <em>Video Business</em> reports event attendees can watch the movie and observer director Zack Snyder's responses. Other details revealed during a media presentation yesterday included the Blu-ray cut's Maximum Movie Mode, a session that takes the run time up to three hours so Snyder can step in and explain various behind the scenes details of the movie -- only hardcore fans need apply.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/25/watchmen-bd-live-directors-chat-set-for-comic-con/">Watchmen BD-Live director's chat set for Comic-Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:58:00 EST. Are you one of the more than 4,000 people (86%) that answered our poll saying you thought <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/02/poll-have-you-been-impressed-by-bd-live/">BD-Live was a waste of time</a>, or didn't see any reason to give it a shot? We <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/11/sony-pictures-responds-to-your-poll-results-discusses-the-futur/">talked to Sony Pictures recently</a> and were promised that more useful reasons for hooking the internet to Blu-ray discs &amp; players were on the way, and today at a press event it showed why it thinks that will come true. Check out the gallery for a few pics of its new MovieIQ app, quickly described as a "wiki for movies" that can tie into your discs and provide information from Gracenote on demand on nearly anything in the movie or even specific scene being watched, from actors &amp; directors to background music. The first <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-live/">BD-Live</a> discs with it should be available in September, we'll be back with more details shortly, for now just let the images do the talking.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Official press release is included after the break<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/">BD-Live MovieIQ</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2093000"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-08-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2093001"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-10-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092990"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-34-48-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092991"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-34-58-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/bd-live-movieiq/#2092992"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/06/movieiq-bd-live2009-06-18_18-35-15-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony Pictures to smarten up Blu-ray with MovieIQ, the "killer app for BD-Live"</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/sony-pictures-to-smarten-up-blu-ray-with-movieiq-the-killer-ap/">Sony Pictures to smarten up Blu-ray with MovieIQ, the "killer app for BD-Live"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 19:22:00 EST.
