The company shared the news during today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/expand/agenda/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Expand conference</a> in San Francisco, shortly after unveiling two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/17/the-inside-story-of-lenovo-thinkpad-redesign/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new ThinkPad models</a>, including the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/17/lenovo-thinkpad-t431s-ultrabook-official/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">T431s Ultrabook</a>. Lenovo hasn't confirmed whether that model will offer tap-to-pay support, too, but we certainly wouldn't rule it out. We've seen contactless payments in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">plenty of smartphones</a>, of course, but widespread tablet and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/12/sony-and-global-hid-to-unify-felica-and-nfc-laptop-reader-techno/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">laptop implementation</a> has yet to arrive.</p><p> <i>Follow all of Engadget's Expand coverage live from San Francisco </i><a href="http://www.engadget.com/expand/agenda/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><i>right here</i></a><i>!</i></p>

RBS (and by extension, NatWest) is partnering with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Visa/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Visa</a> Europe to roll out TouchPay, a mobile payment system based around an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/22/aussie-bank-debuts-kaching-app-accompanying-icarte-case-for-mob/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iCarte case</a> for the iPhone 4 and 4S -- sorry, early <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a> owners. In tandem with a native app, the service allows paying for goods at British shops by tapping the phone at a Visa-capable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a> terminal without needing the short-range wireless built-in. Now, the joint venture backed by AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon has announced that it'll debut its system in Austin and Salt Lake City next month. At least part of the delay is attributed to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">shift in strategy</a>, when Isis shelved its plans to process payments through the carriers themselves and instead work with MasterCard and Visa. Isis representatives have declined to elaborate on future expansion plans.</p><p> Coinciding with the recent update that enabled Isis support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/t-mobile-gs-ii-isis-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">T-Mobile's Galaxy S II</a>, MasterCard has come clean with a list of devices that'll receive similar treatment. Specifically, those in the US can expect the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, One X, Amaze 4G, Galaxy S III to gain Isis support. Naturally, the possibility remains open for other devices as well, and if you'd like to see the complete list of candidates, make sure to check out the PDF below.</p>

Customer Experience Director Shashi Verma told <em>GigaOM</em> that existing NFC technology wasn't able to drop below the 500 millisecond barrier -- something which Transport for London demands from its high-churn Oyster card-based turnstiles. Verma added, "The concerns are only around NFC technology and not <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/31/mastercard-reveals-roadmap-for-our-electronic-payment-future-em/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">EMV</a>. We are keen to see any progress the industry can make in this area." At least for the near-future, it looks like Brits will have to glue their NFC cards to their phones if they want that contactless payment look while journeying around London.</p>

In fact, we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/01/samsung-and-visa-join-forces-to-enable-nfc-mobile-payment-at-201/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">all but knew</a> its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-preview-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">latest and greatest</a> smartphone was going to be the handset-maker's Olympic Games Phone. Today, however, the union has been made official via an announcement with Visa. Trialists and Athletes sponsored by the brands will have access to a special edition "showcase device" with Visa's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/visa-certifies-nfc-equipped-android-blackberry-smartphones-for/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">payWave</a> payment application onboard. The collaboration is, of course, a drive to push the penetration of contactless payments in both the UK and the world stage. Payments under &pound;20 won't need a passcode, and users will also be able to check their balance and purchase history from the app. It's estimated there'll be about 140,000 contactless terminals in the country by the time the Olympic tanks roll in, so plenty of places to pick up that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kirf?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">official merch</a> for the family back home.</p>

<p style="text-align: center; "> <img alt="MasterCard introduces PayPass Wallet Services, Online and API at CTIA 2012" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02827-1336431166.jpg" style="margin: 4px; width: 600px; height: 399px;" /></p><p> MasterCard's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/paypass?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PayPass</a> is certainly one of the bigger players in the contactless payment scene. But, simply putting a few thousand branded payment terminals in stores across the nation isn't enough. The next step is expanding that empire, not only in terms of locations and handsets, but by turning the phone into just an accessory in a larger ecosystem. PayPass Wallet Services is a new umbrella product that includes an online payment system, a branded service and an API that allows developers to integrate PayPass into their own proprietary offerings. Simply put, PayPass is no longer a product, but a platform. The service remembers not only credit cards, but shipping addresses and other identifying info that streamlines the shopping process, while the API means that others can build value added offerings around PayPass. There's even a dedicated Android app.</p><p> The company is hoping to have the system ready for a broad roll out by the third quarter of the year. When that time comes, a pile of partners have pledged to support it in various ways. The names on that list should ring at least a few bells: Intel, Barnes &amp; Noble, Newegg, MLB and American Airlines. It all seems pretty impressive (though, we'll reserve judgement till we get to try it out). Your move, Google.</p><p> <em>Zachary Lutz contributed to this report</em></p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MasterCard PayPass Wallet Services</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/5008245?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02824_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/5008244?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02826_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/5008243?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02828_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/5008249?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02804_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/mastercard-paypass-wallet-services/5008248?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/dsc02807_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

It would seem Mountain View's complacency is Moneto's gain, as the outfit's recently put up for sale its $30 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/moneto-nfc-microsd-contactless-payment-Android-iPhone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC-enabled microSD card</a> -- enabling plebes everywhere sans contactless circuitry to sashay their way into mobile payment heaven. That card is also stuffed with 1GB of storage for your exploits and those plunking down three Hamiltons are also privy to a $10 credit thrown in. There's one caveat, however, as per its website the service currently only works on variants of the Galaxy S (including carrier permutations like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/samsung-t-mobile-vibrant-and-verizon-fascinate-preview/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vibrant</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/07/samsung-fascinate-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fascinate</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/samsung-galaxy-s-4g-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S 4G</a>). Support for an additional forty devices is inbound but before committing, we'd peep the latest compatibility info from the horse's mouth in the more coverage link we've included below.

Despite repeated industry attempts to build a <em>buzz, buzz, buzz</em> around <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a>, growth of the promising communication tech has only been stilted by limited, real-world implementation -- not to mention a dearth of enabled devices. This stunted consumer adoption hasn't put a damper on Visa's stride towards a contactless payment future, as the company's just announced a list of smartphones, both here and in Europe, that officially support its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/paywave/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">payWave</a> system. Owners of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Samsung Galaxy S II</a>, LG Optimus NET NFC, BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9790 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 / 9380 can now count themselves among the privileged few that can swipe to pay with the application. If you happen to be rocking any of the phones listed above and are keen to propel your preferred method of payment into the future, you can now pass GO.

	While it may have arrived with the Nexus name, Google's latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/verizon-galaxy-nexus-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">flagship</a> has appeared without <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Wallet</a> functionality, despite the inclusion of NFC hardware. Fortunately, it hasn't taken long for a few eager Android tinkerers to get it working on the LTE model. There's still a few hiccups and bugs and the phone needs to be rooted and unlocked, so consider yourself forewarned: you're on your own if it bricks. Still, it works -- user Mike Beauchamp was able to add extra funds to his account and make his first NFC McDonalds purchase. His video demonstration awaits after the break, Nexus-toting risk-takers can find a full step-by-step guide at the Google Plus link below.<br />
	<br />
	<strong>Update:</strong> We talked too soon. Those that fear the uncertain future of a rooted handset now have a workaround. An APK is now up for grabs at XDA-Developers that will furnish your new favorite smartphone with Google Wallet goodness, hack-free. Non-US residents, however, still appear to be locked out from adding funds to their account. Let us know how it goes in the comments below.<br />

Jersey girls and boys can now <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/google-wallet-goes-to-the-garden-state-nj-transit-riders-get-t/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">tap and pay</a> their way around, but for the Garden State's myriad of malls, cash'll still have to do. Not so for the Ozzies Down Under who may soon never have to leave the comfort of food court chairs -- if they're packing a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/google-wallet-adds-coupons-rewards-points-jamba-juice/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S</a>, that is. Designed as a concept by University of Sydney start-up SDigital, special coaster-like "brand stickers" affixed to eatery "brand tables" would relay fast-food menus to mobile phones via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a>. Hungry, hungry humans would then make their selections, order up and receive a vibrating notification when the food's ready. It's a contactless payment solution not unlike the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/mastercard-demos-google-wallet-qkr-platform-for-mobile-payments/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">QkR platform</a> MasterCard demoed for us last month. And given our ever-increasing crawl towards the bleak adult baby form factor of our potential <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Wall-E/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Wall-E</a> futures, we'd say this tech's right around the public release corner. Head on past the break for a video demo of the <em>tukkis</em>-numbing, Foodcourtia tech.

The perks of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google's Nexus S</a> used to lie solely in its unadorned OS. Now, owners of its penultimate Android flagship are about to get some additional mileage out of their Gingerbread-bearing handsets, courtesy of that underused NFC chip. The recently awakened near field communication feature's already been put to public task by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a> and participating merchants, and will now add NJ Transit to its list of contactless payment partners. Select locations throughout the Garden State's transportation network, including Penn Station and Newark Airport's AirTrain, will let owners of Sprint's Nexus S 4G tap-to-pay for tickets at windows and vending machines. Unfortunately, the mobile payment system won't replace your need for an actual physical ticket or monthly pass just yet, and requires you opt-in with either <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/mastercard-demos-google-wallet-qkr-platform-for-mobile-payments/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Citi Mastercard</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/20/polyamorous-google-wallet-adds-visa-to-its-arsenal/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Visa</a>. Still, it's a definite boon for rushed commuters who'll no longer have to juggle their bags, bagels, coffee and phones in an effort to buy a ticket and make it to work on time. Not yet enabled via NFC? Tap-to-erase-spray tans, but that's coming in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/18/samsung-galaxy-nexus-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy Nexus</a>, right?

Stacking the lineup against <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a>, manufacturers HTC, LG, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have been drafted by team Isis, agreeing to implement its NFC technology standard into future phone offerings. By garnering multi-manufacturer support, the joint AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon venture is pulling a power move against Mountain View's offering -- currently only functional on Sprint's Nexus S 4G (although that's almost certainly bound to change). Finally gearing up for battle, the crew recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-give-isis-mobile-payment-network-a-1/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">pumped $100 million</a> into the initiative, helping to win support from the aforementioned hardware heavy hitters. For those who aren't ready to buy a new phone just to jump on the NFC bandwagon, Isis says it's working with DeviceFidelity to add the functionality to older models as well. The more devices that have the technology, the better the chance we'll be ditching our leather wallets for the mobile variety. <em><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Or so they say</a>.</em> Check out the full PR after the break.

How do you compete with Google's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleWallet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Wallet</a> mobile payment system? Well, a $100 million cash infusion certainly couldn't hurt. AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon have plans to invest just that amount in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Isis/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Isis</a>, sources told <em>Businessweek</em>. That sum is likely to grow, since taking on Google is no small feat, especially considering Wallet is already off the ground, with nationwide retail partners and support for MasterCard PayPass. Though Isis first made its debut last year, Google Wallet, which was announced in May, has clearly taken the lead. Isis is little more than a top-level website at this point, though with three of the nation's largest carriers providing support, it could have a chance to catch up -- especially if the carriers elect not to partner with Google, leaving Sprint as the sole wireless provider. We're glad to see some potential healthy competition for Wallet, especially considering that it was looking like Google was poised to create a monopoly. We expect much more to come on the Isis front, but in the meantime, hold on to those wallets -- cell phone payments may be in your future, but for now, paper and plastic are where it's at.

Still eager to do business with a company that'll lock your account on a whim and side with the buyer regardless of the facts? Splendid! If that's you, PayPal would love for you to know that it has announced a new phone-to-phone NFC payment application at MobileBeat 2011, offering <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/samsung-nexus-s-utilizing-nxps-pn544-nfc-chip/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S</a> owners the ability to request and transfer funds between handsets. As of now, the functionality is quite limited -- there's just a single smartphone with the hardware capabilities to take advantage, and there's no phone-to-anything <i>not</i> a phone supported as of now. In other words, this isn't exactly a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/29/square-to-add-encryption-to-mobile-card-reader-skimmers-put-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Square</a> killer just yet, but it's definitely something for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/28/paypal-v-google-a-tawdry-tale-of-trade-secret-misappropriation/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">sued folks at Google</a> to pay attention to. We're also hearing that P2P transactions through PayPal are gratis "if using a bank account or existing balance in the customer's PayPal account," but no one's coughing up details on what'll be deducted in the form of fees when using a different method of payment. A video demo of the 48 second transaction awaits you after the break, but sadly, there's no details on how soon it'll be made available to the public.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: It'll be available in the Android Market "this summer."

Certain to "Keep Austin Weird," Isis has selected the home of SXSW as its second market for a mobile payment tryout. The joint-venture backed by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-announce-isis-national-mobile-commer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless</a> (with help from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MasterCard and Visa</a>), will work with local merchants and the Chamber of Commerce to deliver what it calls a "comprehensive mobile experience" by mid-2012. Isis' latest metropolitan recruit joins <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Salt Lake City</a> in this experiment that will compete with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/google+wallet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a> (which is endorsed by Sprint). Quick advice to Austinites: when out-of-towners begin gawking at you for getting "free" lattes and concert tickets by waving your phone about, be sure to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">explain the wonders of NFC</a> -- it'd be a shame for them to attempt the same -- only to be taken into custody by the Austin PD. Jump the break for the PR.

Here's an interesting idea from a Chinese company called Netcom (not to be confused with the Norwegian operator): adding NFC capability to existing phones via microSD. That's right, rather than relying on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/27/iphone-4-gets-stuck-with-nfc-sticker-from-japans-softbank/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">external add-ons</a> that occupy ports, Netcom decided to fit NFC chips plus their antennas onto ordinary microSD cards, yet still managing to cram in up to 8GB of NAND memory at the same time. This sure sounds convenient, but there are some caveats: the first rule is that neither the back cover nor the microSD card holder should be made out of metal; then secondly, we noticed that due to the tiny antenna coil, scanning could become tricky if the reader has a small sensing area -- you'd need to position your phone at just the right spot; and lastly, the phone needs a special background app to communicate with the NFC circuitry.<br />
<br />
The demo we saw used a Java app running on a Chinese dumbphone, and we were told that Android will be next in line to receive similar support. Alas, consumers won't be able to pick up one of these cards from the shops, though Netcom's already working with a "top ten" phone manufacturer on a compatible device due in three to six months, so stay tuned. Hands-on video after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> As pointed out by some readers, it turns out that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/visa-teams-with-devicefidelity-for-contactless-payments-via-micr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">DeviceFidelity</a> beat Netcom to the market last year.<br />

	Okay, so we're not <em>totally </em>sure Google will be unveiling its Google Wallet contactless payment system, but we're rather certain that whatever the company has to unveil will have something to do with paying for things using a wallet that doesn't contain physical money yet features some sort of Google branding. Today, a leak allegedly from The Container Store appears to have spilled the beans on the moniker for Mountain View's mobile money method: Google Wallet. Not the most creative cognomen, but at least it sums up the service succinctly. Still, it's no <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-announces-ice-cream-sadwich-for-q4-2011-for-smartphones/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Ice Cream Sandwich</a>, but we'll find out how it tastes live at tomorrow's event.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Eagle-eyed reader Steve pointed out that looking up the <a href="http://www.whois.net/whois/googlewallet.com">WHOIS info</a> for googlewallet.com does indeed lead you to Mountain View, though this was created way back in 2005. You may recall that Google Checkout was initially known as Google Wallet, as reminded by <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/news/internet/google/229625634"><em>InformationWeek</em></a>, but we just noticed that the URL is now plain dead instead of taking us to a Google error page, as it did minutes ago. Very intriguing.

There's been rumors of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/27/google-teams-with-mastercard-and-citigroup-for-nfc-payment-demo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google-fied mobile payment system</a> for some time, and now it looks like the Mountain View crew is teaming up with Sprint to finally make it happen. Last month, we heard that the Now Network would bring <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/04/sprint-says-its-nfc-based-payment-service-will-launch-this-year-beat-ot/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC payments</a> to its customers this year, and <em>Bloomberg</em> reports that the partnership and payment system will make its debut on May 26th. Apparently, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C. are the first cities getting the service, which is a much broader initial footprint than its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Isis mobile payment competition</a>. The anonymous sources also say that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/15/google-said-to-be-preparing-nfc-checkout-trials-for-san-francisc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Verifone</a> and Vivotech are providing the hardware and software that will let you replace your credit card with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/08/nexus-s-4g-on-sale-today-200-at-sprint-150-at-best-buy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S</a> -- because you <em>always</em> wanted to replace your credit card with your Nexus S.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> According to <em>All things D</em>, the payment system will be put through its paces by none other than El Goog's Executive Chairman <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EricSchmidt/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Eric Schmidt</a> at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AllThingsDigital/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">D9: All Things Digital</a> conference next week -- where we'll be on hand to peep the contactless payment presentation in person.

Yay for the UK, it's now one step closer to catching up to the Japan of last decade. Mobile carrier Orange is today launching the UK's first mobile phone contactless payment service, dubbed Quick Tap, for purchases up to &pound;15. It works on MasterCard's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/paypass?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PayPass</a> system and requires you to have a Barclays debit or credit card or, alternatively, a credit card from Orange itself. Gemalto is providing the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/gemalto-bringing-nfc-payments-to-phones-of-any-intelligence-with/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SIM-based NFC compatibility</a>, with Samsung's entirely unrevolutionary Tocco Lite being the (admittedly affordable) launch handset. Then you just need to trust the Quick Pay app to be as secure as promised and you'll be ready to go off and use your phone as a payment terminal at over 50,000 locations, including joints run by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/24/mcdonalds-to-start-accepting-contactless-visa-payments-in-all-u/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">McDonald's</a>, Eat, Pret A Manger, Subway, and Wilkinson. A quick intro video and a more expansive press release follow after the break.

When AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon came together to create the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-announce-isis-national-mobile-commer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Isis mobile payment system</a>, they touted a standalone service, powered by Discover's payment network, that would revolutionize the way we make small purchases on the move. Well, the revolution is still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">on schedule</a>, apparently, but the big trio is now being said to have made a concession in reaching out to the incumbent leaders in this field, Visa and MasterCard. The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> cites multiple sources in reporting that Isis has turned into a less ambitious "mobile wallet" project that would seek to let you use your Visa or MasterCard account via your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/02/blackberry-bold-9900-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC-capable</a> smartphone. As far as the consumer is concerned, it's still the same swipe-to-buy proposition, but the move was apparently necessary for Isis "to avoid falling further behind" in the race to corner this developing market. We'd say it's encouraging to see these guys showing a bit of swiftness -- it's about time the rest of the world caught up to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/27/iphone-4-gets-stuck-with-nfc-sticker-from-japans-softbank/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Japan</a>.
