We've heard <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/13/apple-reportedly-trying-to-add-movie-streaming-to-its-icloud/">again</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/12/steve-jobs-approached-leslie-moonves-about-streaming-service/">again</a> that it's coming, so get ready to hum along with that 'ol tune one more time. <em>Reuters</em> is reporting that Apple has been in negotiations with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> since earlier this year, hoping to secure access to films from Lions Gate, MGM and Paramount Pictures. There's no indication of when such a service might come to light, but <em>Reuters</em> indicates the company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/netflix-epix-deal-is-official-paramount-mgm-and-lionsgate-mov/">current deal with Netflix</a>, which expires on September 1st, could be a conflict (though that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/epix-brings-its-thousands-of-movies-to-google-tv-android-roku/">hasn't stopped Google TV</a> in the past). So, no proper Apple-branded TV until the fall? Stay tuned...</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/27/apple-tv-streaming-talks/">Reuters: Apple in talks to stream films owned by Epix, no deal expected before September</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 16:51:00 EST. Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/06/microsoft-unveils-live-tv-streaming-for-xbox-360-from-sky-tv-fo/">new dashboard</a> for the Xbox 360 is close at hand (read our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/05/xbox-360-dashboard-update-fall-2011-review/">full review</a> for the details) but not all of the video partners <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/05/microsoft-reveals-new-tv-providers-on-xbox-360-in-the-us-and-int/">that were announced for the new Kinect-centric experience</a> will be launching alongside it. As of launch December 6th the list will look basically the same as it does now, with Lovefilm and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> joining options like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Sky Go. Later on in the month more new providers like Crackle, Dailymotion, Rogers On Demand, Vudu, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/29/verizon-details-live-fios-tv-service-for-xbox-360-kinect-contro/">Verizon FiOS TV</a> will filter in, while the UFC app is timed to launch <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/ufc-on-xbox-live-delayed-to-dec-20/">December 20th</a>. Finally, a few highly anticipated additions including MLB.tv, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hbogo">HBO Go</a> and Comcast's Xfinity On Demand are among those slated for arrival in "early 2012". Check after the break for the complete list (<strong>update</strong>: and a video trailer), we'll let you know about more specific launch dates as they become available.<br />

While some video providers are moving away from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/10/fox-com-joins-nbc-abc-and-cbs-by-blocking-google-tv/">Google TV</a>, <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2011/04/21/google-puts-the-kibosh-on-rokus-unofficial-youtube-channel/">Roku</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/24/rim-wants-hulu-plus-on-the-blackberry-playbook-conversations/">Playbook</a>, and Netflix still has yet to officially release its movie streaming app on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netflix,android/">any Android devices,</a> the <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/epix/">Epix</a> channel is going all in. Following its "Big on Any Screen" slogan, it will roll out apps on a slew of devices over the second quarter beyond its current <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/epix-brings-movie-streaming-to-mobiles-courtesy-of-adobes-open/">Flash player</a>. The Google TV portal is already up and running as seen above and apps are on the way for "Android tablets and phones from HTC, LG and Motorola" -- <strike>we've pinged to see if this will be device exclusiv</strike>e but haven't received a response yet -- the BlackBerry Playbook, Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players and Roku streaming players. Not listed in the press release is anything iOS, but Epix confirmed it is working on an app that is waiting for Apple's approval. Not familiar with the channel? It has over 3,000 movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM plus original programs and live events that is available via your cable or satellite TV provider and launched with an HBO Go-style <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/06/08/epix-hd-720p-movie-streaming-service-eyes-on/">online component</a>. Verizon <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/10/30/epixhd-celebrates-todays-fios-launch-with-weekend-movie-streami/">FiOS</a> is apparently on deck to help push the new apps, check out the rest of the details in the press release after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: We've confirmed with Epix the Android app should work on all devices running 2.1 or higher, while the site will also remain available to any other hardware that supports the Flash player.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/epix-brings-its-thousands-of-movies-to-google-tv-android-roku/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Epix brings its thousands of movies to Google TV; apps for Android, Roku and Playbook on the way</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/epix-brings-its-thousands-of-movies-to-google-tv-android-roku/">Epix brings its thousands of movies to Google TV; apps for Android, Roku and Playbook on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 27 Apr 2011 13:34:00 EST. Nearly a year after Dish <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/dish-adds-epix-hd-and-eight-more-to-crack-the-200-hd-channel-bar/">added Epix's premium movie channel</a> to its catalog the satellite company is announcing it has integrated the online portion with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/23/dish-network-launching-dishonline-com-this-week-streaming-seve/">DishOnline.com</a>. Subscribers to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix HD</a> can log in and check out HD flicks like <i>Star Trek</i>, <i>Shutter Island</i> and <i>Iron Man 2</i>, right next to content from their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/slingloaded/">SlingLoaded</a> set-top box if they wish. there's a press release after the break if you need more details, but we're pretty sure you're capable of heading to the site and figuring out how to press "play" all on your own.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/dishonline-com-adds-streaming-movies-from-epix/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DishOnline.com adds streaming movies from Epix</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/dishonline-com-adds-streaming-movies-from-epix/">DishOnline.com adds streaming movies from Epix</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 13:54:00 EST. Netflix streaming queue starting to look a little stale? It's working on that, and has signed a deal that brings EPIX's library of movies to Watch Instantly -- just not <em>that</em> instantly. If you're not familiar with <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/epix">EPIX</a>, allow us to refresh you, it's a network launched last year <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2008/04/20/viacom-paramount-lionsgate-and-mgm-team-up-for-new-premium-chann/">by Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate</a> that brings their movies home (though often unfortunately cropped and zoomed to 16x9) through a linear channel, video on-demand or internet streaming. Under this new agreement, movies from those studios can come to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Netflix/">Netflix</a> 90 days after they debut on the premium pay-tv and subscription VOD services. While that means streamers won't get access to <em>Iron Man 2</em>, <em>The Expendables</em>, or <em>Dinner for Shmucks</em> anywhere near day-and-date with their DVD or Blu-ray releases, those kinds of high profile flicks will show up and stick around with greater regularity than we've been used to. The companies haven't released further details, but rumors reported by the<em> L.A. Times</em> suggest licensing costs could reach $1 billion over the next 5 years. The first movies covered by the new deal arrive September 1, likely with flicks from the <em>Star Trek</em>, <em>James Bond</em> and<em> Indiana Jones </em>series (hopefully not<em> Kingdom of the Crystal Skull</em>) among them.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Analyst Dan Rayburn claims on <em>Business of Video </em>that Netflix won't be getting any EPIX movies in HD, so we asked Netflix VP of Corporate Communications Steve Swasey whether we could expect HD streaming movies with <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/08/16/a-first-hand-look-at-the-netflix-movie-parties-on-the-xbox-360/">Movie Parties</a> or if they would have <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/07/25/xbox-360s-new-netflix-movie-parties-disabled-for-starz-flicks/">Starz-like restrictions</a>. The answer? "HD over time and no restrictions on Party Viewing." Take from that what you will.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/netflix-epix-deal-is-official-paramount-mgm-and-lionsgate-mov/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Netflix, EPIX deal is official; Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate movies start streaming September 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/netflix-epix-deal-is-official-paramount-mgm-and-lionsgate-mov/">Netflix, EPIX deal is official; Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate movies start streaming September 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 10 Aug 2010 08:32:00 EST. It appears all Charter60 internet subscribers have free access to the online streams through December 31, so why not click over and check a flick (or two) out.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/28/epix-hd-adds-online-streaming-sign-up-via-charter-net/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EPIX HD adds online streaming, sign up via Charter.net</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/28/epix-hd-adds-online-streaming-sign-up-via-charter-net/">EPIX HD adds online streaming, sign up via Charter.net</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 11:56:00 EST. However the libations may be flowing a bit too heavily around the Englewood, Colorado headquarters since the company claims this puts it over the 200 HD channel mark -- an odd statement since just a few weeks ago it was only at 160 or so, even including PPV feeds. The trend towards HD VOD has certainly changed the channel (or "choices" as the latest trend has become) counting game, but we'll have our eyes pinned to the guide to figure out how this latest bit of funny math went down once these channels are actually on the air.<br />

It looks like our old friend, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/01/real-interview-with-fake-steve-jobs/">Fake Steve Jobs</a>, is doing pretty well for himself. A popular blog, a well-received book, and now -- with any luck, at least -- a new TV series. Currently the Epix network (still only available on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FiOSTV/">FiOS TV</a>) is teaming up with the money men at Media Rights Capital to deliver a pilot called iCON. Featuring a character named Tom Rhodes, "a composite of Jobs and other Silicon Valley titans," the story is described as "a savage satire, a study of ego, power and greed." The man behind it all is none other than Larry Charles (of <em>Borat</em>, <em>Bruno</em>, and <em>Seinfeld</em> fame) who will direct the thing and oversee the script being written by Dan Lyons (Fake Steve Jobs himself). As you might have guessed, the announcement is pretty nutty:<br />
<ul> "We are attempting to do nothing less than a modern <em>Citizen Kane</em>," Charles said. "A scabrous satire of Silicon Valley and its most famous citizen. We needed a bold environment to nurture such a vision. One that was free of pre-conceived ideas. And Epix made it clear they were that place. They asked us to make their home our home. And we have."</ul>
    Since no one we know has actually seen <em>Citizen Kane</em>, we can't tell you if that's a good thing or not. But if it turns out to be anything like <em>Fast Times at Ridgemont High</em>, we love it already! PR after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/epix-tv-network-to-deliver-real-pilot-based-on-the-fake-steve-jo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Epix TV network to deliver real pilot based on a fake Steve Jobs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/epix-tv-network-to-deliver-real-pilot-based-on-the-fake-steve-jo/">Epix TV network to deliver real pilot based on a fake Steve Jobs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 11:12:00 EST. Want to get our attention in a hurry? Tip us on a digital magazine concept for the iPad that combines footage captured by a prototype RED <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/14/red-one-getting-mysterium-x-sensor-upgrade-next-week/">Mysterium-X</a> sensor from inside of a Frank Miller style, noir hellscape. Of course, just because it was created for the iPad doesn't mean that the concept isn't applicable to any of the hundreds (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/10/over-50-arm-based-tablets-launching-this-year/">not an exaggeration</a>) of tablet devices destined to arrive over the next year. The feature concept, created by Alexx Henry and Andrew Grant together with co-directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung, redefines the art of infotainment. And make no mistake: as mainstream media fights for eyeballs this is blood for blood and by the gallon. These are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days. They're back. There's no choice left. And publishers are ready for war. See the video (and making of) after the break.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: While the making-of video says the footage was shot using a "RED Epic M-X Sensor" a screen grab of the actual camera shows that it's a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red%20one">RED ONE</a> (with M-X sensor), not an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/red,epic">Epic</a>. Already offering video to your TV and computer, <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/tag/epix">EPIX</a> is ready to unveil the third part of its "Big On Any Screen" service when it demonstrates a mobile version of the channel today at MWC 2010. It's teamed up with Adobe and the <a href="http://mobile.engadget.com/tag/openscreenproject/">Open Screen Project</a> for a Flash Player 10.1 implementation that it claims offers "highest mobile viewing quality available on mobile devices today," if it can match up with the <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/06/08/epix-hd-720p-movie-streaming-service-eyes-on/">Flash player available on PCs </a>then it has a chance. The ability to pause a movie on the TV or PC and pick up later on your handheld is in the works as well. No word on where we'll see this launch or if your cell carrier will need to be tied to your TV service for access, but we'd figure <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2009/07/28/verizon-to-offer-epix-movie-channel-streaming-service-on-fios/">Verizon's VCast</a> will be near the top of the list.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/epix-brings-movie-streaming-to-mobiles-courtesy-of-adobes-open/">EPIX brings movie streaming to mobiles courtesy of Adobe's Open Screen Project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 06:38:00 EST. Starting in April, Mediacom Communications' customers will be able to pay for access to the 24x7 HD feed as well as the ability to stream all of the same movies via EPIX's website. We're still on the fence about the value of this channel, on one had you get access to stream the content in high quality, but on the other there are networks that charge around the same price give you multiple HD channels. We haven't sat down and figured out how many movies you are getting access to compared to the multi-channel options, but ultimately the value of the online streaming isn't much to us since we prefer to watch HD on our HDTV. Regardless we're sure someone will be happy to have another choice for HD movies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/13/epix-coming-to-mediacom-communications/">EPIX coming to Mediacom Communications</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 21:46:00 EST. Cox VP Bob Wilson acknowledged helping customers increase their anytime/anyplace access was key to increasing satisfaction, we'll see if the pace of additions is similar to that of FiOS. EpixHD promised to bring the social media heat along with the online movie streaming component of its service, and now it has partnered with ClipSync to do just that. Netflix and a few BD-Live enabled titles might argue with the "first true Social TV platform" claim, but form what we can see, it should be very easy to pick up a viewing party of other EpixHD subscribers and catch a flick via your web browser while chatting. It looks like the network may also take a page out of the Blu-ray book with movie screenings featuring stars of the films, but that's still in the distance. Anyone up for another <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/16/a-first-hand-look-at-the-netflix-movie-parties-on-the-xbox-360/">EngadgetHD viewing party</a>?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/02/epixhd-flips-on-social-movie-viewing-online-with-clipsync/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EpixHD flips on social movie viewing online with ClipSync</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/02/epixhd-flips-on-social-movie-viewing-online-with-clipsync/">EpixHD flips on social movie viewing online with ClipSync</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 15:06:00 EST. Right on schedule, the linear version of the three-screen focused <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">EpixHD</a> service will go live for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fiostv">FiOS TV</a> subscribers starting at 8 p.m. Already VOD and internet accessible, launch weekend (and subsequent weekends) will spread high definition streaming cheer beyond just the fiber-connected as anyone can grab a 72 hour access pass to stream some movies (we don't recommend <em>Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull</em>, but pretty much everything else mentioned in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/12/epix-hd-queues-up-iron-man-madonna-and-eddie-izzard-for-online/">launch lineup</a> or the official PR after the break seems good.) Chief Digital Officer Emil Rensing let us know what the trip from beta to reality has been like, and while there won't be many tweaks in the experience from our largely positive preview experience, expect additional features like movie extras, behind the scenes peeks and more to roll out across the site over time. <a href="http://www.epixhd.com/invite/">EpixHD.com/invite</a> has the 72 hour passes, while we hear the company <a href="http://twitter.com/epixhd">Twitter</a> isn't a bad spot to check for extended access while waiting for its "movies anywhere" strategy to become officially available in your neck of the woods.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/epixhd-celebrates-todays-fios-launch-with-weekend-movie-streami/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EpixHD celebrates today's FiOS launch with weekend movie streaming passes for all</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fiber/" rel="tag">Fiber</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/epixhd-celebrates-todays-fios-launch-with-weekend-movie-streami/">EpixHD celebrates today's FiOS launch with weekend movie streaming passes for all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 00:15:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix HD</a> has locked down a launch date and lineup, confirmed for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/28/verizon-to-offer-epix-movie-channel-streaming-service-on-fios/">Verion FiOS</a> subscribers so far, the festivities will kick off October 30th with television and online premieres of <em>Iron Man</em>, <em>Madonna "Sticky &amp; Sweet: Live from Buenos Aires,"</em> and <em>Eddie Izzard: Live From Wembley</em>. Other titles set for launch weekend are <em>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button</em>, <em>Madea Goes to Jail</em>, <em>Pink Panther 2</em>, the Indiana Jones movie that sucked, <em>Cloverfield</em>, <em>The Duchess</em> and more. Microsoft's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/windowsmobile6.5">Windows Mobile 6.5</a> release is just a month away, and so too are the first phones that will utilize it. <em>Boy Genius Report</em> has managed to get its hands on one slide from a recent AT&amp;T concall confirming a partial list of the handsets set to ship with the new, improved, more finger-friendly flavor of the OS, and even a few models that will be upgraded to it. Two from Samsung, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/14/samsung-jack-comes-to-atandt-on-may-19-99-99-on-contract/">Jack</a>, will receive version updates in October, while HP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hp,obsidian">Obsidian</a>, earlier targeted for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/">November</a>, seems to have been pushed back to December, and LG's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lg,monaco">Monaco</a> similarly has slipped to November. Two from Samsung, the <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> and <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/14/samsung-jack-comes-to-atandt-on-may-19-99-99-on-contract/">Jack</a>, will receive version updates in October, while HP's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/hp,obsidian">Obsidian</a>, earlier targeted for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/hp-triumphantly-returns-to-atandt-with-ipaq-k3-obsidian/">November</a>, seems to have been pushed back to December, and LG's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/lg,monaco">Monaco</a> similarly has slipped to November. HTC's <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/htc,fortress">Fortress</a> (a.k.a. the Pro2), however, will apparently be ready with bells on next month. As will we, dear readers. TV channel / online service combo <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a> has finally locked up its first distribution partner, Verizon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fios">FiOS TV</a>. Not a lot of details are available yet, but Viacom CEO Phillippe Dauman says it can offer the service a la carte, in bundles with broadband, and even plans a mobile VCast offering. We've already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/epix-hd-720p-movie-streaming-service-eyes-on/">had a peek at the in-beta HD streams</a> and saw a lot to like, with planned access on three screens and flicks from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/studio-3-networks-epix-is-the-new-home-of-lionsgate-mgm-and-para/">MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount</a> locked up for years to come Epix is shaping up as a very formidable offering prior to its planned October launch.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Epix hit us off with the official PR (posted after the break) but here's the most important details - in the coming weeks, Verizon customers will be able to access a preview of the network, either through their VOD menu on the FiOS set-top box, or by visiting EpixHD.com and entering their account info.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/28/verizon-to-offer-epix-movie-channel-streaming-service-on-fios/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Verizon to offer Epix movie channel / streaming service on FiOS, VCast</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fiber/" rel="tag">Fiber</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/28/verizon-to-offer-epix-movie-channel-streaming-service-on-fios/">Verizon to offer Epix movie channel / streaming service on FiOS, VCast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 11:44:00 EST. After making sure there was a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/studio-3-networks-epix-is-the-new-home-of-lionsgate-mgm-and-para/">domain name locked down</a> for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Epix</a>, the new premium movie network formed by Studio 3 Networks (Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM) it was all about taking advantage of an early peek at the 720p Flash powered site to see what a new generation of home movie distribution has to offer. The tech end (opening up to invited users this week for beta testing) is powered by Akamai's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/13/akamai-supports-dynamic-hd-streaming-on-adobe-flash-starting-wi/">variable bitrate streaming streaming</a> technology, delivering up to 3mbps HD video with stereo audio all the way down (6 different levels) to 500kbps encodes. Where it surpasses current online offerings from the competition is the ability, thanks to the aforementioned studio backers, to provide many of the recent movies you want to see. Our impressions of the service and a few more pictures of the interface are after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/epix-hd-720p-movie-streaming-service-eyes-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Epix HD 720p movie streaming service eyes-on</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/features/" rel="tag">Features</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/epix-hd-720p-movie-streaming-service-eyes-on/">Epix HD 720p movie streaming service eyes-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 12:30:00 EST. The slide here clearly identifies the Pivot as a "successor of BlackJack series," yes -- but the same slide deck also refers to the Samsung Jackie (the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/jack">Jack's</a> codename) as a BlackJack successor, so we wouldn't put too much stock in that. The fact is that this Pivot is a touch-capable WinMo device with QWERTY, and we can't imagine AT&amp;T bothering to stock both this and the similarly-spec'd <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Epix/">Epix</a> at the same time. By and large, this seems like an ever-so-slight upgrade to the Epix, featuring 4GB of onboard Flash, a 2.6-inch QVGA touchscreen, AGPS, WiFi, and a 3 megapixel camera (up from the older model's 2 megapixel unit). It also has triband HSDPA for international 3G roaming, but curiously, it seems that it's lined up to launch with WinMo 6.1 -- at least at the time of this slide's creation, which has the phone pegged for an October launch. That'd be precisely a year after the launch of the Epix -- perfect timing for a refresh, and we wouldn't be surprised if they slipped 6.5 into the mix by the time that happens. Follow the break for a closer shot of the phone.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/25/samsung-pivot-a-possible-epix-successor-for-atandt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Samsung Pivot, a possible Epix successor for AT&amp;T?</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/features/" rel="tag">Features</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/25/samsung-pivot-a-possible-epix-successor-for-atandt/">Samsung Pivot, a possible Epix successor for AT&amp;T?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 25 May 2009 16:22:00 EST. Now the question is whether the new channel will get the $1.50 per subscriber fee it's asking from potential cable and satellite providers, which could make that planned fourth quarter launch dicier than first imagined. Still, the studios seem entrenched behind the idea of improving their prospects for profiting from their newest, hottest movies like <em>Cloverfield</em>, even in these economic times, so we wouldn't be surprised to see a very <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bigtennetwork">Big Ten Network</a>-style standoff in the making.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/07/epix-and-its-hollywood-backers-looking-to-shake-up-premium-ca/">Epix (and it's Hollywood backers) looking to shake up premium cable</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 20:55:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/20/viacom-paramount-lionsgate-and-mgm-team-up-for-new-premium-chann/">joint venture</a> formed by Viacom's Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate finally has a name -- Studio 3 Networks -- and today announced at NATPE '09 that its "next generation home entertainment service" with both broadband delivery and a traditional TV channel (possibly headed to a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/15/viacom-paramount-lionsgate-and-mgm-channel-being-shopped-as-di/">digital basic lineup</a> near you) will be branded epix. Still most important about the new brand is that due to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/22/showtimes-not-worried-about-the-new-premium-movie-channel-compe/">expiring content deals with Showtime</a>, epix will have exclusive access to Paramount, Paramount Vantage, MTV Films and Nickelodeon Films released theatrically on or after January 1, 2008, plus all MGM, United Artists and Lionsgate flicks from the beginning of 2009 on and a release window two months shorter than the 11 months of other pay channels when it launches in the fourth quarter of this year. Still unclear is exactly where we'll be able to enjoy all 17 remastered* <em>James Bond </em>movies, the <em>Indiana Jones</em> series and more in crisp high definition, as <em>Multichannel News</em> caught president Mark Greenberg mentioning epix could find its way to the aforementioned digital tiers to boost satisfaction on HD content, but didn't set any quality expectations for an Internet or VOD experience. Prior to launch, expect VOD Internet access, while afterwards "authenticated" cable subscribers can get access to DVD extra-styled content online. Still, as <em>Download Squad</em> mentioned, first order of business should probably be buying up the epix.com, epix.net or epix.tv domain names since they're already taken.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.multichannel.com/article/162831-Epix_Eyes_May_Launch_As_Broadband_Portal.php?rssid=20059">Multichannel News</a> &amp; <a href="http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/01/28/3-movie-studios-to-launch-subscription-based-vod-web-site/">Download Squad</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cable/" rel="tag">Cable</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/internet/" rel="tag">Internet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/satellite/" rel="tag">Satellite</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/studio-3-networks-epix-is-the-new-home-of-lionsgate-mgm-and-para/">Studio 3 Networks' epix is the new home of Lionsgate, MGM &amp; Paramount movies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 16:51:00 EST. This is just mean. With 10 days to go before Red <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/27/red-announcing-dsmc-dslr-replacement-on-november-13/">goes official with its Scarlet and Epic announcement</a>, we get this image: a teaser for those of us already teased. Sure, it doesn't look like much now (don't bother looking at the EXIF: nothing), but it's enough to prompt RED Digital Cinema's CEO, Jim Jannard to write that "the most aggressive speculation will not come close to what we will announce Nov. 13th." Careful Jim, our expectations are already pretty high.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/03/red-teases-some-more-in-preparation-for-november-13th/">RED teases some more in preparation for November 13th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 07:21:00 EST. The Samsung Epix, as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/atandts-samsung-epix-now-epically-official/">it's known on AT&amp;T</a>, recently joined the herd of others cluttering up the carrier's shelves after being known elsewhere for the longest time as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/clear-as-mud-samsung-i907-epix-is-atandts-version-of-the-i780/">SGH-i907</a>. For those teetering on a purchase, the cats at <em>Pocketnow</em> have some valuable insight you should probably chew on first. For starters, they found the screen to be stout and the optical joystick to be "fantastic," though the dearth of in-box amenities was a bit of a letdown. On a very positive note, the reviewer never once had to initiate a soft reboot, and the ginormous 1800mAh battery got him through a solid 1.5 days of heavy usage before calling it quits. Unfortunately, the lackluster software suite was the Achilles' heel; critics found that Samsung's Windows Mobile overlays and additions were ho hum at best, and the complete omission of a soft reset hole was just unacceptable. The bottom line? You should probably give this one a handle in-store before buying blind -- as lovely as some aspects are, you don't want to buy into a device that's frustrating to use.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/28/samsung-epix-sgh-i907-gets-reviewed-its-a-mixed-bag/">Samsung Epix SGH-i907 gets reviewed: it's a mixed bag</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 08:46:00 EST. It's already been floating around for a day or two, but Samsung and AT&amp;T have decided to go ahead and follow up their latest WinMo smartphone's release to stores with... oh, you know, some actual press material. The i907 <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Epix/">Epix</a> rundown goes something like this: Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, 3.6Mbps HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, 2-megapixel cam, AGPS with AT&amp;T Navigator, <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/VideoShare/">Video Share</a> support, 320 x 320 2.5-inch touchscreen display, and one of those crazy "optical mice" for on-screen navigation when using the touchscreen itself is just too much trouble. Get it now (or <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/10/20/samsungs-i907-epix-filtering-into-atandt-stores/">yesterday</a>, if you were really on the ball) for $99.99 on a two-year contract.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/atandts-samsung-epix-now-epically-official/">AT&amp;T's Samsung Epix now epically official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:38:00 EST. Get it now (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/samsungs-i907-epix-filtering-into-atandt-stores/">yesterday</a>, if you were really on the ball) for $99.99 on a two-year contract.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/21/atandts-samsung-epix-now-epically-official/">AT&amp;T's Samsung Epix now epically official</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 12:38:00 EST. We've gotten a number of reports today that the Samsung i907 <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Epix/">Epix</a> is turning up in sundry AT&amp;T stores across the lands, and those claims are certainly backed up by a fresh retail unboxing of Sammy's WinMo 6.1 Professional monster for AT&amp;T that's turned up over on Boy Genius Report. "Monster" is the right word here, too, in light of Mr. Genius' claims that the Epix seems to be just about the thickest device offered by the carrier outside the beastly <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/Tilt/">Tilt</a> -- not the news we wanted to hear about a QWERTY handset that looks from a distance to be no more imposing than a <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/tag/BlackJack/">BlackJack</a>. This week is the week for Pantech and Sony Ericsson fans on AT&amp;T to break out the bubbly and throw a wild, crazy party, because the trick dual-sliding <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/matrix">C740 Matrix</a> will be joining the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/W760a/">W760a</a> (check the gallery) for release on Thursday; they'll be available for $79.99 and $129.99, respectively. Down the road, we're now seeing signs of a Pantech "Slate" running $49.99 and a Samsung "Propel" for $79.99 (in three available colors, no less), the latter of which is signed up for a late October release, but we really don't know much more about 'em.<br /><br />We don't have dates, but it looks like that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/epix">Samsung Epix</a> will suck $199.99 out of your wallet after rebates, and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Fuze/">Fuze</a> will run $299.99. Finally, we're seeing an AT&amp;T "Quickfire" that's due in late October just like that Samsung Propel -- but unfortunately, we don't know much about this one, either. Any educated (or completely wild) guesses?<br /><br />[Thanks, Kal]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/slew-of-atandt-phones-comes-to-light-pantech-matrix-released-thursday/">Slew of AT&amp;T phones comes to light, Pantech Matrix released Thursday</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/slew-of-atandt-phones-comes-to-light-pantech-matrix-released-thursday/#1084261"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/se-w760a-att-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/slew-of-atandt-phones-comes-to-light-pantech-matrix-released-thursday/#1084204"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/se-w760a-att-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/slew-of-atandt-phones-comes-to-light-pantech-matrix-released-thursday/#1084205"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2008/10/se-w760a-att-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/htc/" rel="tag">HTC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/pantech/" rel="tag">Pantech</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony-ericsson/" rel="tag">Sony Ericsson</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/08/trio-of-atandt-phones-comes-to-light-pantech-matrix-released-thur/">Trio of AT&amp;T phones comes to light, Pantech Matrix released Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 08 Oct 2008 12:47:00 EST. Okay, bear with us here, because the road to this device is a winding one, to say the least: first, there was the Samsung <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/i780/">i780</a> that launched in Europe. It was informally and unofficially branded the BlackJack III, thanks to its obvious resemblance to Samsung's own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BlackJack/">BlackJack</a> series that has been a stalwart of AT&amp;T's 3G lineup since its early days. More recently, we caught wind of an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/i907/">i907</a> that would be launching on AT&amp;T's airwaves in the next few weeks; thanks to the model number's proximity to that of the i900 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Omnia/">Omnia</a>, it didn't take long for rumors to spread that it'd be an AT&amp;T-branded version of the i900 -- but a counter-rumor claimed that it would actually take the form of the good ol' i780. A training pamphlet now circulating seems to have sealed the deal that this will, in fact, be a tweaked i780, which means we can expect Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, a full QWERTY keyboard, optical mouse, and HSDPA. What's more, the "Mirage" name we'd heard seems to have been tossed out for the way (<em>way</em>) cooler "Epix." Still no word on an exact release date or price, but considering the hefty specs we're expecting and the smartphone label, we're not exactly counting on a free-on-contract deal here.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/atandt/" rel="tag">ATT</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/windows-mobile/" rel="tag">Windows Mobile</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gsm/" rel="tag">GSM</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/edge/" rel="tag">EDGE</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hsdpa/" rel="tag">HSDPA</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/umts/" rel="tag">UMTS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/clear-as-mud-samsung-i907-epix-is-atandts-version-of-the-i780/">Clear as mud: Samsung i907 "Epix" is AT&amp;T's version of the i780</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 09:31:00 EST. Other than having access to Paramount and Paramount Vintage titles released to theaters on or after January 1, 2008, and MGM, United Artist and Lionsgate flicks released after January 1, 2009, the service plans a "robust" VOD component. According to <em>Variety</em>, the big loser here is Showtime, which loses access to several theaters it's depended on for content, and also faces competition for shows like Weeds and Dexter. We're sure no premium movie channel would launch in this day and age without an HD offering, so tell your provider to keep a slot open for this latest addition.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hbo-hd/" rel="tag">HBO-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/showtime-hd/" rel="tag">Showtime-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/starz/" rel="tag">Starz</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/new-content/" rel="tag">New content</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/20/viacom-paramount-lionsgate-and-mgm-team-up-for-new-premium-chann/">Viacom, Paramount, Lionsgate &amp; MGM team up for new premium channel in '09</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 19:37:00 EST.
