The event drew quite a crowd and the 3D quality didn't disappoint. The crew was using a Sony HDC-P1 camera system with 3D rigs by the Pace Cameron Group all sent through a Sony MVX-8000x production switcher. If you didn't catch it live on ESPN 3D, we're sure there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the 3D reruns.

Gallery: Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report
Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 20:42:00 EST. It seems like it's been forever since we last saw college football in 3D at CES and oh my has the technology come a long way. ESPN partnered up with RealD, Marchon, and Christie Digital to present the LSU vs Alabama BCS National Championship game in 3D at the Las Vegas Hotel theater. We left wow'd and believe everyone else did too. We walked about the theater and didn't find a bad spot, although front and center was the best. There were a number of 3D cameras in use to cover the event (details after the break) which featured the same announcers as the 2D presentation, but different cameras from different angles. Of those cameras, the most dramatic was the wireless handhelds that made us feel like we were doing the pre-game interviews ourselves. The only gripe was that the typical 50-yard camera up high and center was not part of the presentation, we found ourselves missing the typical perpendicular shots that are a staple of most football broadcasts. This did reaffirm one thing, though, we can't imagine there's a single sports fan in the world who has experienced their favorite in 3D and not become a fan of the technology.
Just hours before the 2011 NFL season kicks off, the ESPN and the NFL announced a new eight year extension for Monday Night Football that runs from 2014 to 2021 and most notably to us, includes a provision for 3D broadcast rights. The new deal covers items from new studio programming (beginning this season) to availability of games on the WatchESPN mobile app to the Pro Bowl we still won't watch. According to the LA Times, the pricetag for ESPN -- before it's passed on to the cable / satellite company and eventually ends up on your bill in a rate increase -- is around $1.9 billion per season, up from $1.1 billion previously. While this should help quell ideas that ESPN 3D might be axed after its removal from U-verse, the bad news is it could still be a ways off, as we're told 3D broadcasts are expected when the extension takes effect in 2014. Sadly, 3D early adopters are probably used to waiting, with unbundled retail availability of Avatar still pending for 2012, this is just one more item to add to your calendar.
Continue reading ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app

ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 11:05:00 EST. So far, college football is the jewel in ESPN 3D's broadcast schedule, and the network just released its broadcast plans for the 2011 season. The schedule for the 2011 season has increased to 20 regular season games and five bowl games, plus the BCS National Championship on January 9th. Things kick off with UNLV/Wisconsin on September 1st and Miami/Maryland September 5th, while some dates are still TBD. Hit the source link to see the full schedule, which will probably please ACC and Pac-10 fans, although we're not seeing many dates scheduled in the flyover states so most Big Ten (12?) fans should probably hold onto their tickets. Check out our review of last season's coverage, we'll keep some specs handy to see how things have changed in a year.
ESPN 3D doubles its college football coverage in year two originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 12:41:00 EST. Support by AT&T U-verse for the fledgling ESPN 3D channel always seemed halfhearted, while it was one of the providers to carry the channel at launch it was the only one at that time to levy a $10 fee for the privilege of viewing. The good news for subscribers is that $10 fee is gone, but the bad news is the channel has exited stage left along with it yesterday, before the last night of ESPN's big X-Games broadcast in 3D with no apparent warning. AT&T's reason for the move follows after the break, which lays out the case that even despite interested viewers chipping in their Hamiltons it has decided with there's not enough demand to support the "high cost" of ESPN 3D. Slow down on ringing the death knell for 3D everywhere however, since AT&T is still hanging onto its 3D VOD movies, for now. Its willingness to make the rare move of dropping one of the sports leaders offerings definitely speaks to the niche status of 3D, but experience suggests this comes down to a dollars and cents decision across the entire swath of the ever growing ESPN / ABC / Disney family.
Unlike Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas up there you probably don't have ringside accommodations at the Pechanga Resort Casino tonight, but if you believe coordinating producer Phil Orlins, having ESPN 3D is practically the same thing. After a dry run earlier this year that also served as a test for producing the 2D and 3D feed together, there have been several more nights added to the ESPN 3D schedule this summer and the Front Row blog has an interview with Orlins about some of the challenges and advantages caused by 3D. We'll tune in at 9 p.m., but 3D or not, we're thinking it'd all be more exciting if Haye beats Klitshcko or Mayweather stops ducking Pacquiao.
ESPN 3D kicks off summer slate of Friday Night Fights tonight originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 18:58:00 EST. We had already learned a bit about ESPN 3D's summer schedule including X Games 17, but now that the NBA Finals are over, it's announced even more events as it moves into its second year of existence. VP Bryan Burns says we can expect 20 college football games to be aired in 3D this fall, up from 11 last year, including the BCS National Championship just like last season. also on the schedule is the MLB Home Run Derby (again) on July 11, some World Football Challenge soccer matches and a slew of Little League World Series games in August. As much as we enjoy watching the Danny Almontes and Terrelle Pryors of the world, we're all about the amateur sports, but it's been a year -- queue up some pro football and regular season baseball ESPN.
Continue reading ESPN 3D gears up for year two with more college football, Home Run Derby and Little League

ESPN 3D gears up for year two with more college football, Home Run Derby and Little League originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 16:31:00 EST. More than three years after testing out 3D production during a Rugby Six Nations match the BBC is ready to send out its first 3D broadcast during the men's and women's singles finals at Wimbledon. UK viewers can catch 3D tennis via the BBC HD feed on Freeview, Freesat, Virgin or Sky, July 2nd and 3rd. Here in the US ESPN 3D has already announced plans to air those matches, plus the men's semifinal, both live and reaired at more convenient local times. While Panasonic featured its 3D tech last week during the French Open at Roland Garros, Sony is going to be working the dials at Wimbledon along with the BBC as the network undertakes "a 3D TV editorial experiment." 3D Focus TV has more details like the channel listings and a behind the scenes look at a 3D promo shot to advertise movie theater screenings that will also be available during the event. So far Sky has been way out in front of the 3D push in the UK while the BBC is taking a more cautious approach, but since Wimbledon was one of the first sporting events aired in color on the BBC, it's no surprise this pops up as a test event in the run up to new broadcast technologies emerging during the London Olympics next year.
Continue reading BBC picks Wimbledon for its first 3D broadcast in July

BBC picks Wimbledon for its first 3D broadcast in July originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 08:16:00 EST. The NBA Finals kicks off tomorrow, and while the games will air in high definition on ABC, they will also air for the first time in 3D on ESPN 3D. If you prefer your sporting events sans-glasses there's plenty to look forward to: 32 HD cameras, six Super Slo-Mo cameras, a SkyCam and additional tweaks like ESPN Axis graphics. We'd still prefer to swap Mike Breen for Marv Albert and whatever intro music they have planned for John Tesh's Roundball Rock, but that's just us. The 3D broadcast will be held down by Mark Jones and either Bruce Bowen or Tim Legler calling the action. Of course, the fantastic playoffs we've experienced will come to an end eventually, but to fill in the summer sports slate until the X Games, ESPN 3D has also plans to air five Friday Night Fights matches over the summer. Check the press releases after the break for the dates and details, we'll be hunting down our 3D specs.
Continue reading ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule

ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 May 2011 17:26:00 EST. ESPN has released some of the broadcast details for Summer X Games 17, scheduled to occur between July 28th - 31st, and it's increasing from eight hours of 3D coverage last year to a planned 18 hours this time around. Interestingly, the HD schedule has been shortened slightly from 31 hours to 25, but there's still plenty of sports action to catch, including a new Enduro X motocross competition and a move to the streets of downtown Los Angeles for the Rally racing competitions. Check all the details currently available in the press release after the break, we're going to go find and wash our Travis Pastrana jersey.
Continue reading ESPN X Games 17 returns with more than double the 3D coverage, takes rally racing to the streets

ESPN X Games 17 returns with more than double the 3D coverage, takes rally racing to the streets originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 16:53:00 EST. With the second consecutive year of the Masters Tournament being broadcast in 3D, if you're wondering why golf and 3D are such a good match look no further than ESPN 3D coordinating producer Phil Orlin's post on the new Front Row blog. He points out the varying terrain of the golf course and the ability to accurately read greens as reasons why 3D works so well at Augusta, and that watching it that way is the closest thing to seeing it in person. You can see for yourself when 3D coverage of the tournament kicks off today at 5 p.m., and while we're sure more people will be watching than did last year the question is still how many?
ESPN 3D exec explains why golf is such a good fit for the network originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 16:12:00 EST. For the 2011 Masters Tournament AT&T U-verse has a Multiview app of its own to compete with DirecTV's offering, that can watch up to four different holes at once as well as pull up various background info on the golfers and leaderboard. One thing AT&T brings to the table that DirecTV doesn't is live viewing on mobile devices through U-Verse Live TV or computers with U-verse Online, to go along with the 3D coverage, standard channels and VOD highlights. After being the first with 3D pro football Verizon's 3D lineup on FiOS was looking pretty thin, but that changes next month when it will finally start offering ESPN 3D. We've been anticipating its launch since last October, but after ESPNNetworks online streaming it was apparently next in line. The early adopting 3D-capable TV owners near you who subscribe to the Ultimate HD package will see it added to their lineups for no charge, but like U-Verse, it's a $10 add-on for all others. Make decisions regarding those Hamilton's quickly, next on the schedule are the Masters and NBA Playoffs, check the press release after the break for all the details.
Continue reading ESPN 3D will launch on Verizon FiOS April 5

ESPN 3D will launch on Verizon FiOS April 5 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 10:41:00 EST. While the season premiere of newsmagazine E:60 won't air in HD until April 12, a segment featuring Jeremy Schaap and the fastest knife thrower in the world will air shortly on ESPN 3D. Set for 6:40 p.m., apparently since E:60 was the first show of its type in HD, they decided to jump on the 3D train as well. One of the big questions about 3D has been whether or not it can add anything to genres outside of movies, nature documentaries and large events, this would appear to be one of the first tests.
Continue reading ESPN 3D airs its first news story tonight with E:60

ESPN 3D airs its first news story tonight with E:60 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 17:08:00 EST. Take that Mark Cuban. Everyone's favorite HD network owning billionaire called 3D sports DOA after deciding there weren't many people asking about a 3D Super Bowl, but now ESPN's 3D network has queued up its second championship of the year, adding the NBA Finals to its previously scheduled slate of regular season and playoff broadcasts. ESPN 3D has been broadcasting around the clock for a few days now (unless you're watching DirecTV) but while repeats make for easy demo material, if 3D is going to go from an interesting sideshow to an in-demand feature it will take more high profile events like these. If the Mavericks manage to slide past the Lakers or Spurs for a deep playoff run, we'll check back with our friend Mark to see how he'd watch the game if he didn't already have a few seats permanently staked out in the arena.
Continue reading ESPN 3D adds the NBA Finals to its broadcast schedule

ESPN 3D adds the NBA Finals to its broadcast schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 18:51:00 EST. In 2010, the annual Masters golf tournament was the jumping off point for 3D sports broadcasts when Comcast featured it, and this year it will have an even wider 3D audience by being featured for all five days on ESPN 3D. The plan is for two hours of coverage each day beginning with the Par 3 contest on Wednesday April 6 through Sunday between 5-7 p.m. As usual, ESPN's also doing its HD thing for the PAr 3 contest and first two days of the tournament with 4.5 hours of coverage a day just like it has since '08, but we'll be most interested to see just how much the prospective audience has grown since last spring.
Continue reading ESPN 3D is bringing five days of Masters coverage in April

ESPN 3D is bringing five days of Masters coverage in April originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 11:37:00 EST. After kicking off its original 3D productions with X Games 16 last summer and airing X Games 3D The Movie back in '09, ESPN is preparing to cover Winter X Games 15 all weekend across its various platforms as well. The schedule is set for 24 hours of HD sports broadcasts on ESPN and ESPN2, while ESPN 3D is set up for 18 hours of action across nine individual windows. ESPN3 is also getting in on the action with 34 hours of coverage including 10 hours of exclusive coverage and streaming video, while ESPN Mobile TV is carrying 23 hours of coverage and owners of Android or iOS devices can snag the Winter X Games app for even more information. Along with 56 HD cameras and 13 3D cameras, the I-Movix ultra slow motion camera from the Beijing Olympics will be back in action as the Mega Mo providing replays captured at 4500 frames per second. Check the press releases after the break for more details and all the schedules and the above ESPN 3D spot.
Continue reading ESPN kicks off Winter X Games 15 broadcasts in HD, 3D & on mobiles tomorrow

ESPN kicks off Winter X Games 15 broadcasts in HD, 3D & on mobiles tomorrow originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 23:21:00 EST. ESPN 3D has had more live 3D sports broadcasts than we can think of but up until now ESPN has insisted that 3D events required a completely independent production process than that of 2D. This means that any event produced in 3D needs twice as many cameras, twice as much bandwidth to transmit it, twice as much everything. Well, it appears that this might not be the case for all sports because on February 18th ESPN will produce Friday Night Fights in 3D and just feed the HD fans a 2D version of the same feed. The results of this could have dramatic results on 3D broadcasts as we know it because the economical feasibility of 3D becomes much more realistic if a single production crew can feed both viewers; this might even mean cable providers can carry a single feed (like center cutting HD for SD but the 3D version). The other impact this might have on the market is it could influence the choice of a full HD 3D broadcast codec. You see while H.264 MVC used for 3D Blu-ray movies is backwards compatible with 2D, other broadcast methods like Sensio's and Dolby's are not. Oh, and one last thing, check out the gallery from ESPN Gameday Live that was at Sony's CES booth today.
Any old school HD fanboy remembers the 24 hour PBS HD loop in the early days of the format as the go-to-channel even though it was pretty much the exact same content showed over and over again 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So it warms our heart to learn that ESPN will take its part time 3D channel full time even if it doesn't necessarily mean any more live 3D events. The 24 hour repeat of previously aired 3D content will start to flow to ESPN 3D customers starting February 14th. In the meantime 3D fans can look forward to closing out the first 3D College Football season with a bang with the National Championship game in 3D on Monday, with a special edition of College Football Live broadcast in 3D from the CES show floor.
We're just a few hours away from the first NBA game on ESPN 3D when the Heat face the Knicks at 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden, and now ESPN has announced it will have the "television premiere" of the 3D trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides during the broadcast. While we wonder if that will become a trend for the network to show off 3D trailers for the slew of movies coming to theaters in the future, those who haven't bought a 3D capable TV but do want to see how the broadcast looks may want to check out one of the retailers (Best Buy, among others) participating in the CEA's Demo Days, coming back this weekend just in time for the game. Of course, that may mean choosing between Lebron vs. Amare and The Engadget Show tonight, but we're sure you'll make the right decision.
Retailer's 3D Demo Days, new Pirates movie trailer highlight ESPN 3D's first NBA game originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 16:19:00 EST. ESPN 3D will broadcast its first NBA game this Friday night with Heat/Knicks, but it's already adding three new dates to the previously announced 14 game schedule. One is a Bulls/Knicks matchup on Christmas day, while the suns get two Friday night games in January against New York and Portland. Jon Barry and Mark Jones will have the call on the 17th, with Jones scheduled to do play-by-play for ESPN3D all season, so if you're unwrapping a new set and glasses, just make sure you've got everything plugged in by noon so you can catch the game.
ESPN 3D schedules three more NBA games, including one on Christmas Day originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 16:36:00 EST. Mad you missed ESPN's previous 3D college football broadcasts and worried it might not come back? Then get your DVRs and calendars at the ready, because the network has announced its remaining 3D college football broadcasts will follow the Boise State Broncos as they play the University of Hawaii on Saturday, November 6th at 3:30PM ET and Idaho on Friday, November 22th at 9PM ET. Combined with the first ESPN 3D NCAAF game, this means the heavily debated Broncos will at least temporarily hold the record for most 3D appearances in college football history. Sadly, it won't enhance their bid for the biggest 3D game of the season -- you know, the Tostitos BCS Championship on January 10th. But even if the blue turf's weak schedule woes keep them from the title, at least one of their records could still improve by returning to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl -- which ESPN also shared will be aired in 3D. Obviously waiting is no fun, but unless you jacked Adam Sandler's DVR from Click, reading our college football kickoff review can help pass the time until game day arrives.
Final ESPN 3D NCAAF games announced with a Tostitos Fiesta Bowl surprise originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 12:19:00 EST. It is easy for us enthusiasts to forget that for our favorite companies this is all about business. We've followed ESPN 3D since it was announced and until now haven't considered the fact that it might not be here to stay. Nope, in fact it is currently almost half way through a one year trial and according to ESPN Senior Director of Technology, Jonathan Pannaman, "we're still not sure what makes sense for 3DTV and we don't yet see a proven ROI." This has to be a concern for 3DTV manufacturers as its obvious that Hollywood doesn't care too much about helping them sell 3DTVs. We still have until next Summer for this all to shake out, but we're afraid this might turn out like the first season Monday Night Football was in HD, unless ESPN figures out a way to bring down the costs of 3D sports productions.
ESPN 3D still searching for ROI to determine feasibility of second year originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 12:19:00 EST. So far, ESPN 3D's college football coverage has been all Eastern and Midwest games, but tonight we'll see some Pac-10 action as the top ranked (depending on which poll you consider to be valid) Oregon ducks take on UCLA at 9 p.m. It's also the first Thursday night broadcast for the channel, before it features Michigan State/Northwestern on Saturday. Two events in one week something to celebrate? That's the way it is for now in 3D. BTW, if you're in Portland and 3DTV-less, check out a Sony-sponsored tweetup for 3DTVs, Google TV and most importantly, a tailgate with food and beer.
ESPN 3D hits the west coast for Oregon/UCLA game tonight originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 14:52:00 EST. Verizon FiOS subscribers can expect a few new channels in the lineup now that it's reached an agreement with Disney for ESPN content across a variety of channels and even devices. While ESPN 3D isn't scheduled for launch until 2011 (maybe in time for the BCS National Championship game, but too late to catch LeBron, Dwyane, Chris and those other guys take on the Knicks) ESPN Goal Line will go live on the 9th for Extreme HD and Ultimate HD package subscribers (except for D.C. and Harrisburg, PA) giving live look ins at all the college football games on Saturday. Playing further into Verizon's tablet plans, the agreement also means customers can watch ESPN live channels directly on PCs or other authenticated devices, mirroring an earlier agreement between ESPN and Time Warner. Beyond that there's a new Disney Junior channel on the way in 2010 plus Disney XD and ABC Family content coming to V Cast but we pretty much tuned out once we got past the sports part. Check the entire press release out after the break.
Continue reading Verizon, Disney deal means ESPN on tablets, ESPN 3D and Goal Line channel for FiOS

Verizon, Disney deal means ESPN on tablets, ESPN 3D and Goal Line channel for FiOS originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 17:53:00 EST. While ESPN 3D's NCAA football plans are still leaking out in dribs and drabs (Ohio State is featured in the next two broadcasts, hosting Indiana on September 9 and at Wisconsin on the 16th) it has finally released its plans for the NBA season. Basketball fans can look forward to 14 planned broadcasts this season, with eight regular season matchups and six games in the playoffs, including three in the Western Conference Finals. LeBron, Dwyane, Chris and the rest of the Heat kick things off with a visit to Madison Square Garden against the Knicks December 17, with plenty of highlight matches among those that follow. Check the full schedule after the break, with so few on the slate you'll want to make sure you're free.
Continue reading ESPN 3D will broadcast 14 NBA games this year starting with Heat/Knicks December 17

ESPN 3D will broadcast 14 NBA games this year starting with Heat/Knicks December 17 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 13:43:00 EST. ESPN 3D will keep things rolling in week four of the college football season by featuring Auburn, again, as it hosts Steve Spurrier and South Carolina on September 25. That of course makes Auburn the first repeat on the schedule, after this weeks matchup with Clemson. Now that that's announced, we have two questions: Will all of ESPN 3D's games be on the eastern half of the country, and with an abundance of SEC speed on the field from both teams, can 3D cameras possibly hope to keep up with the action before busting into flames?
ESPN 3D's fourth college football broadcast is Auburn/South Carolina originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 13:14:00 EST. The 2009 BCS National Championship game showed us the potential of 3D sports broadcasts but now it's 2010 so while Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow have taken their game to the NFL, ESPN 3D has made it a reality for viewers at home. Last night's Boise St./Virginia Tech matchup was the first of 13 the network plans to air including the next BCS Championship game so we didn't waste any time plugging in a 3DTV and taking a look. Check after the break for our impressions and a bit more explanation on 3D technology (Still not up to speed? Here you were worried that you wouldn't be able to watch ESPN this weekend when the current agreement expires, only to find out that not only did the deal get done, but it brings lots of cool new ESPN products to Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks customers. The most notable is that, in addition to ESPN3.com, customers will be able to stream linear programing from the most well known ESPN networks to your PC and other mobile devices. The deal also includes the addition of ESPN 3D, the new Disney Junior, more ESPN VOD content than we can cover, and a new channel called ESPN Goal Line (essentially The RedZone channel for college football). No hard dates on when any of this will go live, but certainly a great deal for sports fans, and for everyone else, thanks for paying extra so we can get our fix.
Continue reading New Time Warner Cable deal brings ESPN to mobile devices and PCs

New Time Warner Cable deal brings ESPN to mobile devices and PCs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 18:59:00 EST. Despite 3DTVs showing up for sale everywhere, there's just not much content to watch on them yet. We've come out in support of football and sports in general as selling points for 3D more than once, but since ESPN 3D only broadcasts live events and most stores don't have access to the channel, the only way to see it is to buy one. That will change between September 10-12, when ESPN 3D carries the Miami/Ohio State college football game live and teams up with the CEA to bring demos to participating retailers (read: Best Buy, Fry's, ABT and some specialty A/V shops.) Don't worry if you can't run by the store during the game, ESPN 3D is apparently providing highlights from the World Cup, X Games and Boise State/Virginia Tech all weekend. Enough to clear up all the questions and issues with 3D? Probably not, but ultimately the new tech is something that can only sell if people see it, and this will definitely be the widest reaching simultaneous exhibition to date.
CEA's Demo Days brings ESPN 3D to retailers for one weekend in September originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 16:57:00 EST. Don't have a 3DTV setup yet, but still want to get a piece of ESPN 3D's X Games 16 production? Grab a map and find the nearest Sony Style -- and hope it's open past 8 tonight, past 7 Saturday -- since they will be displaying the broadcasts during store hours. Tonight's featured event is Moto X Freestyle, while Saturday the rally cars and their in-car 3D cameras take center stage. If you get a chance to check it out, let us know what you think, or if any other retailers are taking advantage of some new 3D content to try and get customers in the door.
Sony Style stores to air X Games 16 in 3D tonight, Saturday originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 16:52:00 EST. After unveiling the standard college football schedule, ESPN has seen fit to reveal the first three of the 13 games it plans to broadcast in 3D this season. Boise State will face Virginia Tech on September 6, a Monday night, while Ohio State and Miami will do battle September 11, before Clemson and Auburn have their ACC/SEC grudge match September 18. The plan is to have a college football game on ESPN 3D "almost" every week of the season, with the last being the BCS National Championship game January 10. Announcements regarding NBA, college basketball and Winter X Games 15 scheduling are on deck, but this weekend it's all about the Summer X Games 16.
Continue reading ESPN 3D schedules 13 college football broadcasts this season; Va. The debut of X Games 16 and its 8 hours of live 3D broadcast is nearly upon us, and for the first time in ESPN 3D's short history, viewers outside the US will be able to get a look at the action. The lucky country is Australia (already known for being ahead of the curve on 3D) and it appears that AUSTAR won't be content letting Foxtel take the lead like it did with HD, since both will have the network on channel 206 on Friday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. AEST and Sunday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. AEST. All iQ2 and MyStar HD subs (with 3DTVs of course) should have access to the channel -- check the press release after the break for any other details and prepare for some morning extreme sports with your toast & baked beans.
Continue reading ESPN 3D goes international, brings X Games 16 to Australia's Foxtel and Austar

ESPN 3D goes international, brings X Games 16 to Australia's Foxtel and Austar originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 03:22:00 EST. We're just a couple of days away from the beginning of X Games 16 in Los Angeles, and beyond just the high flying acrobatic stunts, it should be also be a broadcasting technological showcase. Just two years removed from making its HD debut, this year's summer X will get 31 hours (up from 20 last year) of dedicated HD coverage on ESPN & ESPN2, 27 hours of simulcast coverage + 10 hours of exclusive video on ESPN3, 28 hours of live video on the ESPN Mobile platform, a YouTube channel plus daily updates on Facebook and Xbox Live. As for that newly launched 3D network? Expect eight hours of live coverage from 14 native 3D cameras (including the "3D Mega Mo" ultra slow motion camera) including men's and women's Super X racing, the Big Air Skateboard competition, and rally car events featuring the first live use of wireless 3D cameras mounted in the car. Even more details are in the press release after the break.
Continue reading ESPN lays out X Games 16 coverage via online, HD & 3D formats, including in-car 3D cams

ESPN lays out X Games 16 coverage via online, HD & 3D formats, including in-car 3D cams originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 16:41:00 EST. We not only didn't get to make the trip to Anaheim for ESPN's first 3D broadcast that was produced in house, but we also couldn't watch it in 3D thanks to the fact that we don't subscribe to one of the three providers who's carrying ESPN 3D. We're sure we weren't alone watching it in HD, but we did appreciate ESPN showing a few shots of the 3D cameras and enjoyed reading Wired's impressions which seemed pretty positive. We'll be keeping an eye out for 3D that is available on our provider, but it really goes to show that at this point in time, the lack of 3D content is a very big concern.
Currently relegated to limited airings on NBC and Versus, post-lockout professional hockey has had a tough time regaining its former status, but a partnership with the sports leader (and its immense subscriber base) could turn that around. On its end, ESPN could potentially have a source for plenty of programming to fill its ESPN 3D schedule, and a partner willing to bend over backwards to accommodate the new technology and its need for closer, lower camera angles to increase the 3D effect. We're not huge hockey fans but we're sure a few of you are, even if you plan on sticking to 2D HDTV viewing of the on-ice action, are you ready for National Hockey Night to make a return?
Could 3D bring the NHL back to ESPN? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Jun 2010 13:16:00 EST. With a mini focus group intact they checked out the Samsung Experience in NYC, taking time to focus on the top of the line 55-inch C9000 LED LCD HDTV. With not much 3D content (the initial viewing was before the world Cup started) they checked out some regular 2D content converted by the display into 3D, while viewers were surprisingly receptive to The Daily Show and Transformers 2 that way, iCarly and American Idol didn't fare quite as well. Still, viewers seemed excited by the 3D Blu-ray movie pack-in, and a short time later, some German 3D fans were impressed by the World Cup presentation, though like our impressions the effect varied based on the camera angle. Ultimately, none of the people asked seemed ready to buy a 3DTV yet, citing lack of content and prices as their main reasons. click through for the full impressions, we'll wait a week or so and see if there's a followup when there's two or more 3D channels and Blu-ray 3D movies to watch.
Samsung 3DTVs put to the test with World Cup, Monsters vs. Aliens and... iCarly? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 20:04:00 EST. Microsoft's new Xbox 360, along with ESPN3 access and an upgraded Netflix interface gave us plenty to talk about -- we'll see if it's actually whisper quiet. We wrap things up with the new TiVo remote and this week's Ask Engadget HD, HDTV or projector?
Last week ESPN 3D launched, and Comcast's information indicated many users with older cable boxes wouldn't be able to get on the action without an upgrade. The good news for TiVo owners is that information has since been updated and now TiVo Series 3 / HD and TiVo Premiere units are on the approved list for 3DTV broadcasts. We're not sure exactly what the hangup might have been and how it was resolved, but if you've got one of those DVRs hooked up to a 3DTV and Comcast service, it's definitely time to get on the phone and have the channel activated so you can watch the World Cup properly.
Comcast adds TiVo Series 3, Premiere boxes to the 3D compatible list originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 15:32:00 EST. During our time at ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut this past week, we were able to peek inside every nook and cranny of the company's technological side. We discovered some pretty remarkable things about the culture and attitude toward innovation, and while the bulk of that discovery will be seen in a forthcoming Engadget Show segment, we couldn't help but share some insight from a kind fellow who has been deeply involved in the blinking lights portion of ESPN from day one. We sat down for a brief one-on-one interview with Chuck Pagano -- ESPN's executive vice president of technology -- following the outfit's 3D launch, and while we were both bitter over the 1-1 result in the South Africa vs. Mexico match, he was understandably excited about the future of his firm's latest channel. For Chuck's take on 3D, the move to HD and the impending arrival of ESPN streams on your phone, be sure to grab your best reading glasses and click on through.
Continue reading Interview: Chuck Pagano talks ESPN 3D, mobile streaming

Interview: Chuck Pagano talks ESPN 3D, mobile streaming originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 12 Jun 2010 21:21:00 EST.
