LEDs on the case let you know how much extra juice is left, and the companion iON Intelligence app automatically redirects power when it's needed, and monitors usage to predict how long 'til your next charge. The iPhone 4 / 4S model will be available from Otterbox's online den for $129.95, and others are in the works for "other top iOS and Android devices." The 16GB iPhone 4S is now R$1,699 ($840), down from R$1,999, while the 8GB flavor of the iPhone 4 now rings in at R$1,099 ($544), reduced from R$1,499. According to <em>O Globo</em>, if you're willing to pay upfront in full (and by phone) you can even snatch an extra 10 percent off both. Otherwise, Brazilians will need to visit the online store to lay claim to the heavily-discounted handsets.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/t-mobile-iphone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="T-Mobile to carry iPhone 5" data-src-height="350" data-src-width="374" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-2012-09-14-600-1.jpg" /></a></p><p> Remember when T-Mobile announced that it would begin carrying Apple products sometime <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/t-mobile-apple-2013/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">this year</a>? It looks like today's the day we finally get more information. As we've been expecting, the fourth-largest carrier is now ready to officially offer the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone</a> after years of inviting customers to bring an unlocked model onto its network. (<em><strong>Update: </strong>see our hands-on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/t-mobile-iphone-5-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">here</a>!</em>) The iPhone 5 will be available in retail stores and online starting April 12th, but you'll be able to <a href="https://explore.t-mobile.com/iphone-5">pre-order</a> one beginning April 5th. Additionally, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4S</a> and 4 will be coming to "select markets," though we haven't seen details on which markets or when they'll be offered.</p><p> What about pricing? You can grab the iPhone 5 for $100 down and pay the rest in $20 monthly installments for the next two years; the 4S will be $70 down (with the same $20 installments) and the 4 will be $15 down with $15 monthly payments. No doubt, this move will make its forthcoming LTE launch even more enticing, but that's not all: T-Mobile CEO John Legere stated on stage that his company's version of the iPhone 5 will support AWS HSPA+ in addition to LTE. HD Voice is also offered on this particular model.</p><p> We also learned that despite the network's use of the "UnCarrier" brand, its version of the iPhone 5 will be locked to T-Mobile until the phone is completely paid off.</p><p> <em>Stay updated on T-Mobile's announcements with our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/t-mobile-iphone-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">liveblog</a>!</em></p>

At least for some iPhone 4S owners that is. We've been able to confirm availability of the upgrade on multiple 4S handsets, but have not seen it yet on an iPod touch or any other iPhone model. The notification screen does specifically call out the update as fixing issues relating to "cellular performance and reliability" on the iPhone 4S, so it's quite likely the update will be for that device only. While better signal reliability would be a welcome upgrade, the bug we've heard the most complaints about is the seriously diminished battery life under 6.1. Unfortunately the pseudo-changelog that appears alongside the update make no mention of improved longevity. Other tweaks rumored to be landing with this version, including better Maps support in Japan, will have to wait for a future release like 6.2.</p>

Samsung claimed the pole position by shipping 18 million copies of its flagship handset during the quarter, compared to Cupertino's 16.2 million iPhone 4S units. Of course, serendipity is also likely at play, as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-whats-changed/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a> hit shelves towards the end of that period, likely cannibalizing 4S sales -- in fact, the market research firm thinks Apple's new top handset will likely trump Samsung in Q4. That means the Korean giant may have to step up its game, or it'll just be keeping the top spot warm for its arch-competitor. Check the PR after fold for more info.</p>

According to <em>The Asahi Shimbun</em>, a decision on September 14th found Apple had not violated a patent related to app downloads, as Samsung's method is different. A dispute regarding flight / airplane mode also went in <st1:city w:st="on">Cupertino</st1:city>'s favor on October 11th, because the technology in question was regarded by the court as incremental. Only one case against Apple remains undecided in Japan -- for a patent on using "homescreen space" -- but, as usual, don't expect that to be the last chapter in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/samsung,apple,patent?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">neverending story</a>.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/canopy-sensus-gaming-case-iphone-4-4s/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="DNP Sensus adds additional input to iPhones for touchy feely gamers" data-src-height="370" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/sensus-hands-on.jpg" /></a></p><p> There's no doubt that smartphone accessories can get expensive, so how about a case that doubles as a gamepad? Billed as "protection with a purpose," Canopy's Sensus case aims to do just that. While there are several peripherals that add <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone%20keyboard/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">keyboards</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/30/add-on-turns-a-smartphone-camera-into-a-joystick-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">joysticks</a> to smartphones, Sensus goes one step further by adding touch input to a device's entire outer surface. The case's sensors recognize an additional ten touch responses, including controls on the sides and back of a device similar to the rear touchpad on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/playstation-vita-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PS Vita</a>. The focus with Sensus is to provide its users with unique touch input combinations that avoid taking up precious screen real estate. Most likely due to its uniformed design, Sensus is currently only being offered for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/22/iphone-4-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">4S</a>; the outfit is taking pre-orders at $39 a pop, with shipments expected to begin in the first quarter of 2013. If you'd like to get a better <em>feel</em> for what Sensus has to offer (we know, we know), check out its demo video by visiting the source link below.</p><p> <strong>Update:</strong> The folks from Canopy let us know that the previously mentioned $39 price is for pre-orders only -- the Sensus will retail for $59, so get in early if you're looking to save some money.</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/27/apple-files-patent-application-siri-voice-assistant/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Apple files patent application for 'intelligent automated assistant,' sounds like Siri" data-src-height="412" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/siripatentap.jpg" /></a></p><p> Siri's managed to make it into several Apple devices now, so it doesn't shock us to spy the company's attempt to patent the polite (somewhat frosty) tones of its voice navigation system. A pretty deep patent application filed today describes an "intelligent Automated Assistant," with the claims describing an application that is guided through the user's speech -- and all wrapped in a "conversational interface." So far, so <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Siri?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Siri</a>. The filing elaborates on Apple's earlier filings, explaining how this digital assistant furthers the users' demands with additional requests for speech-based information -- hopefully resulting in that map location or a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/apple-gives-region-by-region-breakdown-of-ios-6-capabilities-sp/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">movie booking</a> you were after.</p><p> This "user intent" is then put to use, launching an additional app or performing the specified function, while non-speech input (presumably like the ability to correct your requests in text form) get a brief mention. We do get plenty of description on commands though, with some pretty thorough response tables and examples of "anchor text" -- something that the automated assistant tries to pluck from your ramblings in order to make sense of them. The full version resides at the source below, if you're looking for 51 verbose pages explaining Siri's inner workings.</p>

Photog Austin Mann and a few of his closest pals took a pair of iPhone 5s to Iceland following launch weekend in a bid to test the unit's durability, capability and image quality next to the 4S. After two days of geyser spray and admitted "drops in mud," the uncovered 5 seemed to be a-okay, and when it comes to output from the sensor, that's worthy of praise as well.</p><p> The low-light capabilities of the 5 are perhaps the most impressive upgrade compared to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">4S</a>, with much less noise seen in shots from the former. He also gushed over the panorama mode, which admittedly churned out some pretty seamless results of the Icelandic countryside. As for shutter speed? Instead of packing all the brains, the device sits atop a bicycle's handlebar and displays data it's fed via Bluetooth 4.0 from cycling apps running on an iPhone 4S or 5. At launch, the hardware will support the firm's own Cyclemeter application and Wahoo Fitness App which can monitor ride information ranging from location to speed, in addition to heart rate with an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/22/wahoo-fitness-iphone-4s-compatible-blue-hr-heart-rate-monitor-s/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">additional accoutrement</a>. Aspiring Alberto Contadors can page through data and even sift through tunes on their playlist with the help of buttons on the device's side. Gently tipping the scales at 2 ounces, the RFLKT measures up at 2.4- x 1.6 x 0.5-inches and boasts a one-year battery life on a single coin cell. Wahoo's gadget is slated for a December launch, but there's still no word on pricing. For more specifics, take a gander at the full press release below.</p>

You wouldn't guess it from the initial upgrade rate, however. Both ChartBoost and Chitika have determined that about 15 percent of iOS data traffic was already coming from Apple's latest release within its first 24 hours of availability -- not bad, considering that it took Android 4.0 roughly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/01/ice-cream-sandwich-now-on16-percent-of-android-devices/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">eight months</a> to reach a similar ratio and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/ios-5-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iOS 5</a> about five days to hit 20 percent. ChartBoost adds that iPhone owners were the quickest to upgrade, which is only logical when the iPhone 4S gets <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/12/psa-which-ios-6-features-can-my-device-run/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">the most new features</a>. The contrast between Android and iOS was entirely expected, knowing Apple's limited hardware pool and reduced carrier oversight. We're more interested in the differences between iOS versions: they suggest that whatever advantages people see in iOS 6, as well as a widespread over-the-air update system, have been enough to spur on many early adopters.</p>

The initial group of companies to jump on the bandwagon include: Ticketmaster, Live Nation, Lufthansa, MLB.com At Bat, Sephora to Go, Walgreens and Fandango Movies. While this list is a tad bit shorter than we hoped for, it's safe to say that more apps will follow in the not-so-distant future. Want to be the first to know when they arrive? By a pretty notable margin. Picking up the iPhone 5 is almost jarring -- it's barely heavy enough to feel "premium," and it'll probably make you handle it with care for free of breaking it in half with too tight a tug. The new Dock Connector -- also known as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-details-new-dock-connector-its-called-lightning/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lightning</a> -- is most certainly smaller, and looks most at home on the new iPod nano. Without further qualifying, have a look at the comparison gallery below. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S: a photo gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280903?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05854_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280904?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05855_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280905?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05856_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280906?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05843_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280907?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05844_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Apple's Lightning port vs. Dock Connector: a photo gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280915?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05857_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280916?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05858_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280917?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05852_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280918?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05853_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280919?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05850_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

First comes the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/23/t-mobile-lost-more-customers-in-q4-will-launch-lte-in-2013-with/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">heavy-handed hints</a>, then you pull a racy leather number from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/21/mobile-miscellany-week-of-april-16th-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">wardrobe</a> before declaring that you're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/t-mobile-memo-asks-staff-to-sell-against-the-iphone-sept-21/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">fine without it</a> and never wanted the thing anyway. Now it's hit stage four -- throwing caution to the wind and inviting users to bring their unlocked handset into stores and sign up for its $70-a-month (amongst others) unlimited plan anyway. You'll also be able to get hold of network-specific apps like myAccount, Visual Voicemail and T-Mobile TV as soon as they're ready. In order to make this marvel possible, it's rolling out 1900MHz HSPA+ access to allow customers access to its "faux-G" service -- which is one way of enticing you away from upgrading to whatever's coming on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/04/apple-announces-presumed-iphone-5-launch-event-for-september-12t/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Wednesday</a>.</p>

As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/30/two-sources-talk-of-iphone-event-around-september-12th/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">rumored</a>, it seems as if the company's prior <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-in-san-francisco/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPod-focused fall events</a> may be split off into two. It's been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/25/allthingsd-ipad-mini-launch-october/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">reported</a> that an October event may follow this one, with a miniaturized <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/03/eddy-cue-wanted-7-inch-ipad/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">7-inch iPad</a> on the docket for that. <em>This</em> event, however, seems a lock for the iPhone 5 -- or "new iPhone," or whatever it ends up being coined -- and while CEO Tim Cook confessed at D10 that it would be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/29/tim-cook-at-d10-were-going-to-double-down-on-secrecy-on-produ/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">doubling down on secrecy</a>, leakers seem to have doubled down on tipping the world off on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/29/supposed-next-gen-iphone-parts-get-assembled/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">what's to come</a>. The keynote kicks off at 10AM PT in SF, and you can bet we'll be there covering every second of it live. Didn't have any "lunch" plans for 9/12? Looks like you do now.</p><div style="text-align:center"> <span class="event-datetime">September 12, 2012 10:00 AM PDT</span></div>

The company's upcoming Eco-Drive Proximity watch has all the respectability of an analog steel timepiece, but it quietly syncs to an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4S</a> (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/30/two-sources-talk-of-iphone-event-around-september-12th/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">newer</a>) through <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Bluetooth4.0/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Bluetooth 4.0</a>. Miss a call, get a message or approach a meeting, and the seconds hand will point to a word on the dial indicating what needs attention -- there's no broadcasting your geek credentials to everyone in the room. The iPhone syncs its time with the watch if you're so inclined, and a search mode will ping the handset if it's lost under the couch. Expect to pay $550, or about as much as many mid-tier quartz watches, when the Proximity goes on sale in the fall. It's certainly not a trivial price next to other Bluetooth watches, but the public acceptance factor may be more than worth the premium.</p>

The smaller EyeTV Mobile will have you watching DVB-T broadcasts on your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4S</a> or iPad (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/09/ipad-2-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">2</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new</a>), while the EyeTV Micro swaps Apple's dock connector for, you guessed it, microUSB. Not all Android devices support the Micro -- you'll need a dual-core CPU, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/18/xbmc-for-android-available-in-nightly-builds/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Neon</a> support and at least the 4.0.3 build of ICS. That said, the Micro's a generous little chap, as you can use the included USB cable to hook it up to your PC or Mac and get your TV fix on bigger screens, too. Both peripherals can be used with myriad aerials to meet your reception needs, provided you're in Europe, of course. The Mobile and Micro will be available in September for &pound;89.95 and &pound;54.95 (around $143 and $87), respectively, and we hope to see one on the show floor before <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ifa2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">IFA 2012</a> is done, so <em>stay tuned</em>.</p>

Mophie's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/01/mophie-outride-iphone-camera-peripheral/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Outride ruggedized case</a> equips your fragile smartphone with a ruggedized shell, protecting the device while also serving as a helmet / bicycle / flat-surface mount. The thick plastic case includes a raised lens module, and is available in both water-resistant and above ground flavors. That first version is still undergoing testing, according to Mophie reps, so we don't know just how far it can dunk with letting down its guard to condensation, but we do know that it will retail for $149. A land-only version will also be available for $129, and unlike the sealed model, your iPhone's display will still be exposed, giving you full access to the device. Both cases include a dedicated shutter release, which works in camera mode, letting you snap away under the sea. They also ship with a trio of mounts for your helmet, handle bars or a flat surface. Byte Works' TechBASIC 2.3 update takes those barriers down. The mobile app lets those of us with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new iPad</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4S</a> create programs that talk to, and read from, a wide range of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/BluetoothLE/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Bluetooth LE</a> devices without having to write any Objective C code on a Mac. Only a TI key fob has a fully ready example program, but large swaths of devices will communicate with help from intrepid programmers -- whether they're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/heartratemonitor/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">heart rate monitors</a>, home theater gear or seemingly anything in between. Existing TechBASIC owners can add the Bluetooth LE support through a free update; it's a relatively pricey $15 to buy the app if you're new to Byte Works' world, although it may be worthwhile to give any unused sensors a new reason for being.</p>

As it stands, the case involves seven patents that mostly touch on staple technologies of the modern mobile world, such as syncing messages between devices and bookmarking media playback on one device to resume on another. Does that last technique sound familiar? You might recall it being a cornerstone of the movie and podcast support that Apple has implemented <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/05/23/itunes-4-9-adding-support-for-podcasts/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">since 2005</a>. Despite reaching that far back into history, Motorola is just as eager to modernize the targeted hardware list to keep its complaints relevant -- the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/16/apple-ipad-review-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">current iPad</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 4S</a> and other devices are at risk of a trade ban, posing more of a threat to Apple's bottom line than the dust-covered (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/24/itc-judge-finds-apple-in-violation-of-motorola-wifi-patent/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">near-finished</a>) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/06/motorola-suing-apple-for-patent-infringement/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">initial legal challenge</a> from October 2010. Before coming to any conclusions, though, remember that the newer complaint isn't likely to have any speedy resolution of its own. Past <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ITC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">ITC</a> cases have usually taken a year and a half to complete, which could leave most or all of today's technology as another distant memory.</p>
