Both part of the TX-NR family, the TX-NR717 ($999) and TX-NR818 ($1,119) are carrying on the 7.2-channel audio tradition seen on their lower-priced siblings, while a Qdeo processor handles all video upscaling duties -- yes, 4K included. The 3D-ready couple is also packing THX Select 2 Plus certification, a whopping eight HDMI ports on each box, DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD decoding and a revamped 1080p GUI. Onkyo's also said iOS and Kindle Fire variants of its Android Remote App are in the works, though mum's the word on when they'll be up for grabs. Either of these good enough for your home setup? They won't hit shelves until May, which may (baller status) or may not (Average Joe) be enough time to save up.

Continue reading Onkyo intros a new pair of TX-NR AV receivers, prices start at $999

Onkyo intros a new pair of TX-NR AV receivers, prices start at $999 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 00:34:00 EST. The receivers all pack the brand new InstaPrevue (PiP preview of each HDMI source with fast switching) and MHL, while the three networked models are the first with access to MP3tunes cloud stored songs, as well as a number of other services including Spotify. The top of the line TX-NR616 ($699, April, pictured above) packs the most power and rocks a THX Select2 Plus stamp of quality and, along with the step down TX-NR515 ($599, March) has Qdeo video processing that scale video up to 4K res and output audio on 7.2 channels. On the HTIBs, the 7.1 HT-S5500 ($649, March) and 5.1 HT-S3500 bring all the usual features wrapped around a new "Wide Range Amplifier Technology" that it claims reduces signal noise while still pumping up the power through discrete output-stage components. The full list of specs, prices and shipping windows are in the press releases after the break, hit the source links for a few more pictures.
Continue reading Onkyo debuts new entry level receivers, HTIBs for 2012

Onkyo debuts new entry level receivers, HTIBs for 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Feb 2012 11:29:00 EST. Is the devoted remote going the way of dodo? HiFi audio manufacturer Onkyo is certainly hedging its bets with the release of its first Android app, which gives users the ability to control a number of its home theater systems. The Remote App, due out in August, makes it possible to browse content and stream audio from Android smartphones to the TX-8050 and all Onkyo A/V network receivers released this year. This isn't the company's first flirtation with the open world of Android. Late last year, Onkyo beat the competition to the punch by announcing a couple of Android tablets.
Continue reading Onkyo remote app ushers in a new era of losing Android phones in the couch

Onkyo remote app ushers in a new era of losing Android phones in the couch originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 01:52:00 EST. While Spotify still isn't available to US households, the streaming music service just made its first jump to European audio receivers with the help of Onkyo. Having already made its first move to the living room on Sonos systems back in September, Spotify Premium subscribers in Finland, France, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the UK can now stream 320kbps audio while browsing their personal, what's new, and starred playlists from televisions connected to any 2011 networked home cinema receiver from Onkyo, starting with the new 7.2 channel TX-NR609. With any luck, Onkyo will soon be updating its Onkyo Remote iOS app to replace the need for a power-hungry TV just to browse Spotify's 10 million tracks. Sorry North America, at least you've still got dibs on Rdio.
Spotify now streaming over European Onkyo receivers originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 05:34:00 EST. Whether you're shopping with an eye peeled for that HDMI 1.4a 3D-ready sticker or not, Onkyo's rolled the features out across its entire line of HDMI-equipped receivers for 2010, and the first of those have begun showing up at a few online retailers. So far the TX-SR308, a 5.1-channel receiver and the HT-S3300, a 5.1 HTIB system, are the first to arrive proudly sporting $299 and $379 MSRPs, respectively. Now that spring has officially sprung around these parts, more powerful systems with extra features like front mounted HDMI ports, more speakers, more powerful amplifiers and video scalers including the TX-22HDX 2.1 HTIB (pictured after the break) and TX-SR608 7.1 receiver (above) should start arriving shortly. Check the press release after the break for full details of what is available and what is yet to come, or click the read links if you just have to buy one today -- we won't think any less of you.
Continue reading Onkyo's first 3D-ready receivers are slowly trickling into retail channels

Onkyo's first 3D-ready receivers are slowly trickling into retail channels originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 03 Apr 2010 09:10:00 EST. Onkyo gifted Europe with the release of its new top end receivers about a week ago, but now the news has come to the US. Up for grabs next month will be the TX-NR5007, TX-NR3007 and TX-NR1007 ($2,699, $2,099 and $1,599, respectively). As you can guess from the names, the networking theme has been carried across the lineup, so you'll have streaming support (DLNA, Pandora and Rhapsody) right into your receiver. These 9.2-channel models will also let you fill your room with speakers, and you can either choose to use the Dolby ProLogic IIz or Audyssey DSX for extra width or height. The 145-Watt TX-NR5007 and 140-Watt TX-NR3007 have eight (!) HDMI inputs and HQV Reon video processing, while the 135-Watt TX-NR1007 must make do with "only" six HDMI ins and Faroudja processing. As usual for Onkyo, all thee models are feature-packed additions, but if you ask us, the lineup is getting awfully crowded in both specs and price. Just in case its home market was feeling a bit jealous over the US release of the TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 AVRs, Onkyo Japan has brought the DTR-70.1, DTR-50.1 and DTR-40.1 receivers to its Integra lineup. The 250-, 230-, and 190-Watt ratings in the PR need some extra salt, as they're "6-Ohm, 1-channel driven" specs. That said, Onkyo receivers haven't been known to run out of gas; we just wish the specs had a little more real-world applicability. On a happier note, the DTR-70.1 and DTR-50.1 feature Reon HQV video processing and ISF calibration, and all three models get Dolby ProLogic IIz and Audyssey DSX surround processing in addition to network streaming capabilities from the "mere" Onkyo line. If you're waiting for the stateside arrival of these AVRs, there's much more info to be teased out of the machine translations below.
More than a few people have been interested in Onkyo's x07 receiver updates, and now the newness has come to the TX-SR707 and TX-NR807 models. The outgoing TX-SR706 and TX-SR806 models are well-specced to begin with, and thankfully Onkyo didn't mess with that formula. As you can guess from the "NR" designation, the $1,099 TX-NR807 adds in network streaming (including Pandora, Rhapsody, DLNA and Windows 7) to the 135-Watt/channel output. If you can do without the networking and only need 100-Watts, the TX-SR707 will save you a couple hundred bucks. Both models are THX Select2 badged, Faroudja scaling, and let you pick how to use your rear surround outputs by including both Dolby ProLogic IIz and Audyssey DSX processing. Like we said, Onkyo knows how to fill up the spec list, so head past the break for the full PR details.
Continue reading Onkyo TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 receivers keep the updates rolling

Onkyo TX-NR807 and TX-SR707 receivers keep the updates rolling originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 19:24:00 EST. Onkyo is a go-to favorite when it comes to HTIB systems for a very simple reason -- the systems are a great value on day one, and actually have room for growth through speaker and receiver upgrades. Apparently not satisfied with the coverage its current receiver lineup has over the AVR space, Onkyo has now created a new "HT" receiver line based on its HTIB receivers. First up is the $549 HT-RC160, a 80-Watt, 7.2-channel model with 5 HDMI inputs and the same Dolby ProLogic IIz that's been spreading through Onkyo's lineup. Moving up the food chain, there's the $1,049 HT-RC180 that wears the THX Select2Plus badge alongside its 7.2-channels and networking capabilities (including Pandora and Rhapsody streaming). On paper, these look just fine, but we're left wondering why Onkyo opted for double-coverage on turf occupied by its own TX-SR607 and (forthcoming) TX-SR807. How street prices track MSRP on these two "HT" models will tell where they really fit. Full PR after the break.
Continue reading Onkyo mixes HT-series receivers into lineup, confusion ensues

Onkyo mixes HT-series receivers into lineup, confusion ensues originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 14:11:00 EST. Onkyo's $599 TX-SR607 receiver made its way through CNET's auditioning room, and it sounds to us like it holds up Onkyo's tradition of delivering solid performance at entry-level prices. Even though the receiver got dinged for its big, boxy design (which we like, by the way), additional complaints about the unit running hot strikes us as a bit unfair. Given some breathing room, the Onkyo's audio performance stacked up favorably against a Denon 3808CI. At $599, we wouldn't come down too hard on the video upscaling performance; your display might do a fine job on that task anyways. Ah, but what about that new Dolby ProLogic IIz that's supposed to raise your roof? Well, it didn't seem to work for CNET at all -- on a variety of source material and even with boosted levels fed to the height speakers, the effect fell, well, flat. We'd suggest trying out DPL IIz before jumping into the multi-channel arms race.

CNET shoots down the Dolby ProLogic IIz in Onkyo's TX-SR607 receiver originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 01 May 2009 09:39:00 EST. Despite the trickle down of advanced features on many manufacturers' lower-end receivers, there's still plenty of room for their upper-echelon offerings as well, and the UK's AVReview put four £1,200 - £1,500 ($1,750 - $2,200) receivers in a matchup. Entering the ring were the Onkyo TX-NR906, Pioneer SC-LX71 (SC-07 in the US), Sony STR-DA5400ES and Yamaha RX-V3900; we only wish models from Denon and Marantz would have made it to the contest as well. That said, matching up four receivers is not to be taken lightly, and it sounds like each of the contestants would serve you well in both features and absolute performance. We won't spoil the ending for you, but even though only one receiver snagged the overall crown, at this price point you should know that things are more nuanced than a single "winner;" your personal priorities are going to be the biggest variable in choosing the best model for you.

[Boxing glove image courtesy germes-online]
Filed under: Reviews, Receivers, Others, Pioneer, Sony

AVReview pits four high-end receivers against each other originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 07:28:00 EST. Onkyo only kept early adopters of its recently introduced TX-SR507 and TX-SR607 receivers waiting for a month to put the Universal Port (U-Port) 'round back to good use. The company has introduced an iPod/iPhone dock (is there anything that doesn't have one?) and a HD Radio module as U-Port accessories. The $109 UP-A1 iPod dock will allow remote control of the connected device and will output component video to the connected receiver when it ships in May. The UP-HT1 HD Radio tuner will show up in July and for $159 will unlock HD radio reception to your Onkyo U-Port receiver. Neither peripheral is exactly earth-shaking, but it's a safe bet that one of them will enjoy a lot more uptake than the other.
Filed under: Other hardware, Receivers, Others

Onkyo debuts Universal Port-loving iPod dock, HD radio tuner originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 10:57:00 EST. Only the affluent or those willing to blow some serious pounds on their home theater setup need apply here, as Onkyo's top-notch PR-SC886 isn't for the average amateur. The new flagship device is a THX Ultra2 Plus-certified AV preamplifier-processor which decodes every single HD audio format and includes an ISF video calibration function, HDMI upscaling to 1080p via the HQV Reon-VX processor and Burr-Brown 192kHz / 24-bit audio DACs for all channels. Furthermore, you'll find a trio of TI Aureus 32-bit DSP chips, iPod compatibility, 2-channel balanced XLR inputs, 7.1-channel line-level XLR pre-outs, network support and a pre-programmed learning remote. After digesting all of that, surely you won't be shocked and appalled by the £1,500 ($2,246) price tag. Surely.

[Via iGizmo]

Onkyo intros high-end 7.1-channel PR-SC886 preamplifier-processor originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Dec 2008 22:35:00 EST. The summer heat will make you do crazy things, as we saw when Onkyo issued its TX-SA706X 7.1-channel receiver in champagne (a kinder word for "gold") in June. We know the Japanese market (and certain segments of the high end audiophile crowd) have had gold-toned gear since before the transistor, but just because something is tradition doesn't mean we have to go along with it. Cooler temperatures and heads have come around, and the Japanese market will get a black version of the receiver on November 21st, aptly named the TX-SA706X (B). We assume that one little "B" will make all the difference when it comes to matching your other components; unless, of course, you've fallen in for the whole spiel about something else becoming the "new black."

Onkyo Japan regains its senses, offers TX-SA706X receiver in basic black originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 16 Nov 2008 15:07:00 EST. Onkyo's HT-S9100THX has been around the block a time or two already, but for those who've yet to pick up the crowd-pleasing set, you're in luck. Said outfit has just released a revamped version of the kit which includes a 7.1-channel AV receiver "designed to conform to THX's demanding Integrated System Plus certification protocols." Additionally, the system now supports THX Loudness Plus technology and includes four HDMI 1.3a inputs for Deep Color compatibility. You'll also find a Faroudja DCDi video upscaling chip, Audyssey 2EQ / Dynamic EQ and support for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. As for drivers, you'll get seven two-way speakers (one center, four surrounds, two fronts) along with a self-powered (290-watt) 12-inch subwoofer. The HTIB should be filtering out to shops now for $1,099 (MSRP).

[Via Marketnews]

Onkyo updates HT-S9100THX HTIB system originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 17:41:00 EST. Onkyo has already introduced the top-end TX-SR876 and TX-NR906 receivers over in the UK, but for USers awaiting word of their stateside release, let us do the honors. Both of the 7.1-channel THX Ultra2 Plus AVRs are now shipping in America, and as for specifications, you're looking at 140- / 145-watts per channel (respectively), audio decoding courtesy of three Texas Instruments Aureus 32-bit DSP chips, internal decoding for "every major sound format in use today," and HQV Reon-VX video upscaling to 1080p. The pain? $1,799 and $2,299 in order of mention.

Onkyo brings TX-SR876 / TX-NR906 THX Ultra2 Plus receivers to the States originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 11:45:00 EST. Onkyo has added the TX-SR876 and TX-NR906 to its list of UK-approved AV receivers, and wisely chose to send them to England clad in black, just like we got here in the US. As we'd expect from the upper end of Onkyo's lineup, the spec list is piled high and includes: 7x200/220-Watts (TX-SR876/TX-NR906), 4xHDMI 1.3a inputs, 2x HDMI 1.3a outputs, ISF video calibration, THX Ultra2 Plus worthiness, HQV Reon-VX video processing and a slew of convenience features we've come to expect in a modern AV receiver. Unique to the TX-NR906 are networking features, a toroidal transformer, and separate transformers for audio and video paths. The Brits get pricing pretty close to the US -- £1,000 ($1,773) and £1,400 ($2,482) for the TX-SR876 and TX-NR906, respectively.

[Thanks, Anthony!]

Onkyo adds the TX-SR876 and TX-NR906 receivers to its UK lineup originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Sep 2008 07:30:00 EST. Besting its DTR-5.9 sibling, the new DTR-6.9 AV receiver from Integra has earned itself the THX Select2 Plus certification. In fact, it's the first Integra model to meet that spec, which among other things means that the DTR-6.9 packs THX Loudness Plus wizardry for those of us who value our hearing and don't listen at reference levels all the time. As you'd expect from the Onkyo roots, the feature set is solid: 7x100-Watts, four HDMI 1.3a inputs, Faroudja scaling, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA and Audyssey MultiEQ. And because it's an Integra, you also know that custom installers get some niceties as well: multizone audio that can tap into a pair of the 7-channel amplifier section, 12-volt triggers and remote control via ethernet, RS-232 and HDMI. All in all, a nice tidy package for $1,000.

Gallery: Integra DTR-6.9 AV receiver

Integra's DTR-6.9 AV receiver carries THX Select2 Plus badge, $1k price originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 13:19:00 EST. Whether to call it a "champagne" or "gold" finish, we're not sure, but Onkyo is definitely making some kind of fashion statement with these receivers. The TX-SA806X is the natural follow-up to last month's TX-SA706X announcement, but then Onkyo went and broke the naming convention with the TX-NA906X receiver. That's some kind of marketing. But the specs on these new 7.1-channel models look good -- typical beefy Onkyo construction is good for 200- and 180-Watts (into a 6-Ohm load) from the NA906X and SA806X models, respectively. Some notables include the Reon HQV video processing, 4-in / 2-out HDMI 1.3a ports and DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD decoding. We'll let you read on through for all the spec details, but with these shipping later this month, we hope that TX-SR906 and TX-SR806 models for export can't be far away. Pricing for these two is ¥367,500 ($3,300) and ¥262,500 ($2,400). Check it, Onkyo fans -- your main outfit has just revealed two new AV receivers and a pair of HTIB systems, so we're going to get right down to it. Both the $1,099 TX-SR806 (pictured) and $899 TX-SR706 receivers are THX certified and include Faroudja DCDi video processing capabilities, Audyssey room acoustics correction and Dynamic EQ, and Onkyo's Music Optimizer. You'll also find at least four HDMI 1.3a ports and 1080p upscaling. Moving on, we've got the $899 HT-S7100 and $799 HT-S6100 HTIB systems, each of which include a receiver, seven-channel loudspeaker system, a powered subbie and an obligatory iPod dock. It has been quite awhile since Onkyo's Integra branch delivered any new wares, but with IFA and CEDIA both just around the bend, it follows logic to see some fresh faces begin to emerge. What you're peering at above is the DHC-9.9, a potent AV receiver with 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio support, HDMI 1.3a ports, an HQV processor, Ethernet jack, IR extender port and an RS-232 control socket. No telling when it'll head stateside, but those in Japan can add one to their home theater for ¥231,000 ($2,164).

[Via ElectronicsInfoOnline, thanks Mike]

Onkyo reveals Integra DHC-9.9 AV receiver originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 20:19:00 EST. It's too early to tell if gold-colored components really are making a comeback, but you better believe Onkyo's at the forefront of the gilded parade. Shortly after pumping out the TX-SA606X in Japan (and the TX-SA606 in America), the TX-SA706X has arrived to take things one step further. This 7.1-channel receiver delivers a potent 200-watts of juice to each channel and includes five HDMI 1.3 inputs (alongside one output), a frequency response of 5Hz to 100,000Hz, Audyssey Dynamic EQ processing and built-in decoding for Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio formats. Granted, such a monster of an AVR won't become your very own with putting a nice size dent in your wallet, but those in Japan can treat themselves on July 19th when it lands for ¥189,000 ($1,781).

[Via HDTV Space]

Onkyo has continued to roll "X06" updates across its receiver lineup. Last month we heard about the TX-SR576 and TX-SR506 models, and now we get the TX-SR606 (not to be confused with the TX-SA606X). Apparently Onkyo wasn't too eager to mess with the success of last year's TX-SR605 receiver, the new model adds 1080i upscaling, two more HDMI inputs (making a total of four), and trades off Neural Surround in favor of Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Onkyo's Music Optimizer processing. The amplifier section and pricing look to be the same, which isn't a bad thing on either count: $579 (MSRP) nets you 90-Watts across 7 channels, all backed by the heavy transformer cores Onkyo is known for. Available any day now, this might look good with your stimulus check; or consider picking up a TX-SR605 on the cheap.

[Via WidescreenReview]

Onkyo continues its receiver refreshes with TX-SR606 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 11:05:00 EST. Let's face it, not everyone has a cool grand to drop on a new AV receiver, but Onkyo's looking out for the low- to mid-rangers out there with a nicely equipped duo each sporting a price tag under five bills. Both the $379 TX-SR506 and $479 TX-SR576 feature 32-bit DSP processing, 192 kHz / 24-bit digital-to-analog converters on all channels, 7.1-channel processing for Dolby Digital EX, Dolby ProLogic IIx, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, and DTS Neo:6, support for the firm's Remote Interactive iPod dock / charger models, the Audyssey 2EQ automatic calibration system and Onkyo's dual-source Powered Zone 2 capability, which allows the receiver's rear surround amplifier channels to power stereo speakers in a second room while still listening to 5.1-channel sound in the main zone. Each unit also touts a trio of HDMI inputs, optical / coaxial digital audio ports and at least 75-watts per channel.
