First Warner, now Disney, we're wondering if any of you are actually interested in any of these DVD trade in programs? Besides the issues of availability & selection there's whether or not you get to keep your old discs, and the simple hassle of participating. Still, clearly the studios think there's a market for these programs to get people jumping into Blu-ray discs and players, so let us know, are you biting?
According to the National Retail Federation, 29 percent of Black Friday shoppers visited electronics stores and some of the hottest items were those that are near and dear to our heart like HDTVs and Blu-ray players. So we wonder what you might have bought on Black Friday. Personally we wouldn't be found dead near any store on Thanksgiving weekend -- and generally avoid retail stores for the month of December -- but then again it shouldn't be much of a surprise that we do most of our shopping online.
Blu-ray players aren't the only deal going this weekend (check out our Black Friday roundups for more) but the fabled Blu-ray player for less than a hundred bucks is making an appearance at multiple stores this weekend so we've just got to know, will you be buying one? While Amazon and Newegg dole out LG BD270 players for around $99, Meijer has a Sylvania model for $89 and Wal-mart brings an $80 Magnavox NB500MG1F, matched by hhgregg's $80 Toshiba offer. Not cheap enough yet? onSale.com has refurbed Magnavox's for a mere $70, although with all of these you'll be missing out on some features from the higher priced players. but even the thriftiest among us can grab a Netflix streaming, BD-Live ready Insignia NS-BRDVD3 from Best Buy for a penny under a Benjamin, so what's your excuse going to be?

Just how far audiophiles will go to experience sensory nirvana -- and whether it's all in their mind or in their ears -- is a subject that can be discussed forever, but for now we'll try to break down just how much it means to you. We know the vast majority of the Engadget HD community is already surround sound equipped, but how far do you go to get the absolute top notch experience? Drop the details of your setup in the comments below, especially whether you think you've done enough or have even further to go in the audio quality arena.
The ratings are in and ABC's V was the highest rated series premier this season with a rating of 5.0, a 13 share which equals 13.9 million viewers. Of course this doesn't mean that many actually liked it and since we were pretty split here at Engadget HD, we wanted to know what you thought of this new Si-Fi show.

With Christmas right around the corner and the CEA predicting that consumers will spend more on electronics this year then last, we have to wonder what our dear readers think is the best Blu-ray player. Of course the PS3 is the most obvious answer since it pulls double duty as a gaming device, but movie lovers might prefer a standalone with other streaming features like VUDU or Netflix. At the same time, home automation nuts might prefer a player with discrete IR codes or maybe an RS-232 port. So keeping everything include the price in mind, which is the best Blu-ray player?
Last year Amazon ran away with the results, but it's 2009 now, Wal-mart has expanded its focus on Blu-ray (even nabbing the exclusive on TDK-style IMAX scenes for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen release next week), Circuit City no longer exists and that weird guy in the white panel van even has a much better selection than he used to. So, where are you buying Blu-ray movies?
Blame Christmas Creep ((C) Tuesday Morning Quarterback), but we're already getting our Black Friday (R.I. P. KURO Friday) attack plan laid out. With prices diving and features spreading on Blu-ray players, receivers, LCDs and plasmas -- remember when a $1,000 42-inch 1024x768 plasma was a big deal? -- we figure you must have an idea of a big ticket item getting replaced in the next few months. Poll choices are for which component is getting added/swapped out sooner rather than later, let us know what product you're waiting for a price drop on in the comments.
The technology exists, or will soon, the only question is how or if it should be used. We know it won't require a huge stretch for your provider to deliver 1080p broadcasts, and CableLabs is right in step with others trying to figure out how to bring 3D home, but as a viewer which one would you rather see? As always, write-in votes are allowed so don't be afraid of the comments section.
Let's be clear right up front, we're not asking you how much you want to pay because we already know the answer; as little as possible. We want to know, what is the most you would pay. Now before you answer, lets put this into perspective. A dual tuner TiVo HD costs $300 at retail (plus subscription), a Moxi is $800 and the old ATI single CableCARD tuners were $300 -- so unlike the Ceton tuner, you'd have to rent four CableCARDs instead of just one. So keeping all that in mind, what is the most you'd pay for a single PCI-E card that could turn your Windows 7 PC and Xbox 360 into the best premium content HD DVR today?

According to a recent Nielsen report, 57 percent of US internet users reported that they've surfed the internet while watching TV. This sounds spot on to us, because we do it all the time. In fact we surf almost constantly while watching football to keep up with stats and fantasy teams, and have even been known to look up a forgotten character on Lostpedia while watching our favorite show. So are you as bad as us and record shows that you plan to playback while you have your laptop with you on the couch, or are we just weird. In the interest of full disclosure, this post was written in a room with no TV and was not influenced by any HD programming.

Finally, it's official and in our hands for a review. Now you decide, with the addition of HDMI-CEC, bitstreaming for the latest codecs, and in a quieter smaller case (although it might be a little slower loading, for now) the PlayStation 3 Slim is better and cheaper than ever for your home theater. So let us know, is that enough to get you to purchase one?
View Poll

Filed under: Polls, Blu-ray, Players, Sony

Poll: Will you buy a PS3 Slim to use as a Blu-ray player? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. It's that time of year, from now 'til CES a constant stream of new displays will finally be launched, touting specs, features and bullet points. We've discussed it again and again, the ills done by so-called HD channels against perfectly good content, whether it's passing off SD as high definition with Fox Widescreen, vomit-inducing stretching on TNT & TBS or the inexcusable cropping, zooming and pan & scanning of movies broadcast on AMC and HBO. But which one is the worst? Let your voice be heard, and if we forgot anything drop us a line in the comments.

View Poll

Poll: What's the worst mistake HD channels make? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sun, 09 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Now that we've gone in depth with Windows 7 Media Center, with enough pictures, videos and explanations to make your head spin, if you haven't already made the jump are you considering making it a part of your home theater? Talking about it on the podcast this week, cost was a big reason why not, but moving beyond that the benefits of customization, integration, multiroom and everything else it can do are very compelling. Let us know if you've tried it out and how you're feeling about the latest iteration of Media Center.

View Poll

Poll: Do you / will you use Windows Media Center in your home theater? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 15:30:00 EST. Yeah we know, it's only been a month, but just like Apple and Microsoft, Apple and Blu-ray are the magic words, so when a smidgin of Blu-ray support popped up in the latest Final Cut Pro, we had to revisit the topic. Is everything properly lined up for a Blu-ray equipped Macbook, Apple TV or Mac Mini HD, or will it all be for naught once again?

View Poll

Poll: Is Final Cut Pro an indication of more Blu-ray support coming from Apple? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 25 Jul 2009 14:00:00 EST. Comcast , Time Warner and assorted partners are throwing a big push behind the upcoming On Demand Online / TV Anywhere trial, clearly attempting to preserve their business model and keep customers signed up for cable. You've heard our thoughts so far in video, audio and text, now it's your turn to speak up. So, are you just not that impressed by watching TV on your computer, or do you think on demand place shifting could be the next big thing and a big reason to keep / switch to cable? Forget widgets and ten-foot experiences. If someone's designing a lightweight, net-connected operating system, why not jam that into a flat panel and let us have our way with it? That's the idea we had after all the Google operating system news of the last week, although like an embedded Boxee solution or the long rumored AppleTV TV, we may be waiting a while whether its ChromeOS, Moblin or something else, although there's already least one Media Center Extender-packing display on the way from Toshiba. Real simple question. Internet video delivery has been promising to kill disc for about as long as this site has been around, and Microsoft's E3 announcement of 1080p instant streaming with surround sound and even social watching features is merely the latest shot across the bow. So tell us, when it launches this fall will that be enough for you to consider internet video as an alternative to Blu-ray when deciding how to watch a new movie?

View Poll

Filed under: Polls, Blu-ray, Media streamers, Other hardware

Poll: 1080p streaming video vs. Blu-ray originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sun, 07 Jun 2009 15:45:00 EST. Hulu has made it very clear that it doesn't want the likes of Boxee, or anyone else really, making Hulu work on your TV. Not only has Hulu been willing to play cat-and-mouse games with Boxee, but in the EULA of the new Hulu desktop application, it specifically states that "You may not download, install or use the Hulu Software on any device other than a Personal Computer including without limitation digital media receiver devices (such as Apple TV)." Competitors have previously stated that Hulu advertisements are generating "scant incremental revenue," so with the recent Xbox 360 and Roku rumors we wonder, how much would you pay for Hulu on your TV?
We've just about gotten our head around game consoles being HD video delivery boxes, whether its downloads from the Xbox Live Video (or should we call it Zune) Marketplace or PSN, or Blu-ray discs slipping into our IR receiver-less PlayStation 3, but is anyone really ready to make the jump to watching live HDTV through a console? That's not necessarily possible yet even through the current PlayTV implementation in the UK or the yet to launch BSkyB / Xbox 360 tie-up, but one has to wonder if the desire for such products is out there, so we're putting the question to you.

View Poll

Filed under: Polls, Other hardware, Set-top boxes

Poll: Do you actually want to watch TV via your game console? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 30 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. Oh connected HDTV, you blew away the fans at CES just a few months ago, but it seems most still don't plan on buying one immediately. Looks like that feeling of putting a purchase off may be justified, with our hands-on finding performance on the latest Samsung model a bit laggy at the moment. Last week we took a peek into plans for future HDTVs, but it's 2009 and for buying an HDTV in the here and now there's only a few flat panel choices - while plasma definitely has its fans, facts are gentlemen (and most buyers) seem to prefer LCDs. As seen at CES, every manufacturer has kicked the competition for backlighting and image quality up a notch, with higher quality CCFL backlighting and even LED trickling to lower end brands, most notably Vizio's planned $2,000 55-inch HDTV due later this year. Further confusing things, though Samsung will also have an updated local dimming LED backlit line on shelves later this year, it's currently touting slim, energy efficient edge lit LED models, despite their slightly lower picture quality, while some top of the line LCDs with older CCFL lighting keep pumping out high quality pictures. So we bring the question to you, of the technologies currently on the market, which one has you convinced it's a good buy?

View Poll

Filed under: Polls, Displays, LCD, Plasma

Poll: Best LCD backlighting choice? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 16 May 2009 12:00:00 EST. With all the buzz about the new Star Trek movie -- IMDB of 8.2 and at #82 of all time already -- we might actually head to the theater to check it out instead of just waiting and enjoying it on our HDTV at home. So we're wondering: Which is the better movie going experience, IMAX or DLP, for an HD Snob? Now there is little doubt that DLP is the way to go when a movie is created with a digital camera like the RED, but Star Trek was filmed the old fashioned way with Kodak 35mm film (Kodak Vision2 100T 5212, Vision2 500T 5218 to be exact). At the same time IMAX is a no brainer when there are IMAX filmed sequences in the movie like in the case of The Dark Knight. So considering that to present Star Trek on either IMAX and DLP requires some sort of conversion, we wonder which is the best way to go?

It's been a little over a year since we got our first look at BD-Live in the home, so ow do things look now? That first experience was certainly quite disappointing, but in the intervening year there's been at least a few small steps forward, along with some notable failures. The hearing is over and both sides have presented their cases to the judge, but it could be up to a month before there's a ruling on the NFL Network vs. Comcast case, and with the channel due to disappear in just a few more days we're leaving the decision up to you. The growing number of "zone 2" speaker taps on the latest generation of receivers is all the evidence you need that multi-room audio systems are big with consumers. Cynics might argue that 7.1 channels of sound pretty much saturated the living room, but a study from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) says that people with multi-room audio covering more than two rooms are happy with their setups. A whopping 85-percent of those folks would take the plunge all over again, and with more than half of them using their systems daily, it's easy to understand why. With prices on multi-room audio moving down -- especially with after-market solutions -- we're hoping lots more people jump into this product sector and join that happy 85-percent.
Filed under: Industry, Polls, Media streamers, Other hardware, Speakers

Multi-room audio owners are all smiles with their purchase originally appeared on Engadget HD on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 09:21:00 EST. Alright, Steve may have called Blu-ray "a bag of hurt" but Microsoft's Laptop Hunting mom & son duo (ad embedded after the break) looked pretty happy to see it in their new VAIO laptop. The Apple / Blu-ray rumors flying since the format launched have amounted to very little and for now it's up to iTunes to take care of ones legit HD movie fix, so we've just got to know, is that enough to send you running to XP, Vista or Windows 7? Still, the news that the $1 Blu-ray surcharge is kicking upwards next month based on how many discs you can have out at once is making many previously happy (or not-so-happy) customers rethink their status. Still, Blu-ray discs are more expensive and if you've been happy with Netflix's service so far, maybe it remains a good deal. After a couple days to let the news settle in pick one, and let us know why in the comments.

View Poll

Poll: Will Netflix's new Blu-ray rates cause a change in your subscription? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST. Remember those goofy "Switcher" Mac commercials? Don't ask us why we had one in particular on our mind, but it got us wondering -- how many of you have been advocates for Blu-ray? Have you invited a pal over to see the wonders of BD? Have you lobbied the benefits of 1080p films in an effort to get your best bud off of DVD and onto the real deal? Or are all your so-called "friends" just using you for your home theater? Bottom line: we're interested in knowing just how much the Blu-ray Disc Association owes you in sales royalties.

This week's poll question is pretty simple, really. Even if you've taken the Blu-ray dive, are you still spending your hard-earned cash on DVDs? Are you still forking out for DVDs instead of making the switch to Blu-ray? Discuss the pros and cons below if you'd like, and remember, upscaling really is all that's needed for some people. Okay, videophiles?

Considering that we just gave away 25 pairs of tickets to a 3D screening, we're expecting some serious responses to this one. With 3D doing its best to come storming back into relevancy, we've seen studio after studio commit to pumping out flicks in 3D. All the while, cinemas have been transitioning just as quickly, giving viewers the option to catch new films in 3D so long as they're kosher with rockin' the shades. So, have you checked out a theater screening in 3D? How was it? Do you plan to go again? Avoid 3D at all costs?

With all the crazy Hulu / boxee happenings this week, it got us thinking -- how many of you out there are really into web-based content? By and large, most of what's on the tubes isn't available in "real" HD (read: broadcast quality), but we get the feeling that the convenience factor may still be drawing some of you in. Is this the case? Are you sold on internet TV? The pay-TV providers sure believe that you are, regardless.

As the plasma world continues to crumble, we're stopping to ponder how this is affecting current, prospective and future customers. For any of you that were this close to pulling the trigger on a new plasma, has this week's news shaken your confidence in the technology? Are you still planning to buy one? Might you buy an LCD or projector now? Feel free to elaborate on how the mass exodus from PDP has changed (or not) your perceptions.

While Blu-ray recorders have been available in Japan for years, here in the US it's Blu-ray's third year and there's no sight of one. The reasons are obviously not technological and instead limited by DRM and other factors, but we think one of those is that the market might be too small. So we're asking you since we know you're the early adopter type; Would you buy a Blu-ray recorder if you could?
