<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/11/playstation-store-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="PlayStation Store update hitting PAL regions on October 17th, North America on October 23rd" data-src-height="370" data-src-width="620" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/10/psstore-1349982901.jpg" /></a></p><p> If you feel the current design of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playstationstore?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Store</a> leaves a lot to be desired, then you'll probably be glad to hear it's being totally revamped. A new UI should do a better job of pushing fresh content at you, and its appearance will be consistent regardless of whether you're outputting in standard or high def. Searching has been improved to handle abbreviations and misspellings, and a dynamic list of suggestions will try to work out what you're looking for as you type. Also, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/playstation-vita-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vita</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/psp-go-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP</a> content will be separated, new filters will be available and content hubs will offer everything linked to a certain title, &agrave; la the Xbox 360 Marketplace. Sound good? Well, there's not long to wait - it'll be launching in PAL regions (Europe, Asia, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region> and others) on October 17th, while North Americans will receive it almost a week later, on October 23rd.</p>

No really, we hardly knew ye -- which is probably why Sony is warning <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP</a> owners that its comic book portal is shutting down after October 30th. Come Hallowe'en, we'll lose the option to download the necessary app or buy additional titles. Any currently owned comics will be available to download again until mid-January, but readers will be on their own to preserve existing libraries after that. Outside of Japan, that creates significant problems for literary PlayStation fans: while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/playstation-vita-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PS Vita</a> owners in Sony's home country will get a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Manga/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Manga</a> store and reader in October, there's no equivalent crutch for other countries (or any PSP owners) at this stage. The console maker is non-committal and says there's nothing it can discuss "at the moment," which to us is a hint that we shouldn't plan our reading hours around a PSP or PS Vita in the near future.<br /> <br /> [Thanks, Sooraj]</p>

During its press conference this evening, Sony dropped &yen;3,000 (about $40) from the &yen;16,800 (about $215) base price of the PSP in Japan, putting the console at &yen;13,800 (about $176). It's unclear if any price drop will affect North American or European consumers, but we'll update as we find out more.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/01/psp-gets-its-own-homebrew-online-gaming-network/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Image" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/05/psp-prometheus-online-network.jpg" style="margin: 4px; width: 480px; height: 272px;" /></a></p><p> Sony made much ado of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP's</a> position as one of the first online gaming consoles, but unless your idea of online play involves <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/30/psp-3-90-firmware-update-with-skype-available/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Skype calls</a>, there hasn't been a lot to go on since 2004. Team PRO is addressing that deficit through Prometheus, a completely community-driven rival to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSN/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSN</a>. The hack lets PSP games with support for <em>ad hoc</em> WiFi play go online by wrapping the normal local-only multiplayer in an emulator library that broadcasts to other Prometheus players. It requires a second-generation or newer PSP as well as a wireless router that can expose the PSP in DMZ mode, but there's a live who's-playing board and even an in-game chat mode to coordinate that round of <em>Fat Princess</em> as it happens. Of course, using a wholly separate gaming network outside of Sony's rubric involves a whole lot of warranty-voiding risk; if you're willing to live on the edge, though, Internet games of <em>Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker</em> or <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2012</em> will let you put off that possible <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/13/playstation-vita-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita</a> purchase for a little longer.</p>

That would be "M" as in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psn,maintenance?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">maintenance</a>, which is what the PlayStation Network will be going through from 8AM (PST) to 11PM. The outage means that both the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home might not be accessible while Sony does its maintenance magic. "B-b-but, I'm supposed to be credit farming Firebase White with my Mass Effect 3 buddies during that exact, <em>same</em> time," you say? Chill, buddy -- the maintenance won't affect online play so you can continue to abuse those hapless, chirping Geth. Folks who signed in to PSN within the last five days will still be able to access apps like Amazon Instant Video and Netflix as well. Hey, it could always be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/23/playstation-network-outage-blamed-on-external-intrusion-conti/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">worse</a>, you know.</p>

Now the consumers are hungry for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/06/3ds-sales-figures/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nintendo's 3DS</a>, given that it shipped 121,921 units in the week ending April 1st. That put it comfortably ahead of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/13/netflix-kids-ps3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation 3</a> (23,771), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/23/psp-games-playstation-certified-devices-ESRB/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP </a>(18,356) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/28/sony-psvita-exploit/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PS Vita's</a> (12,105) sales <em>combined</em>. The stats reveal that the 3DS is now accounting for 65 percent of all hardware sales in the country, a marked turnaround from when the console's future looked gloomy. Meanwhile, the biggest selling game was Kingdom Hearts 3D for Nintendo's newest handheld, which managed to shift over 200,000 units in <em>just</em> seven days.

The game was pulled without warning (probably to the consternation of tennis fans) as the company attempts to keep absolute control on its new platform. It's the second title to get the treatment after hacker Wololo discovered an exploit in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/02/ps-vita-homebrew-loader-arrives-today/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>Motorstorm Arctic Edge</em></a> that allowed the <em>Vita Half-Byte-loader</em> to be launched on the device. It looks like the game of cat-and-mouse between <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/27/sony-gets-a-kaz-style-kick/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">massive corporation</a> and a single individual will continue for a while, with Wololo claiming they've got access to around 10 more undiscovered exploits. Popcorn, anyone?

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/03/psa-playstation-network-goes-down-for-maintenance-tomorrow-wil/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/psn-1-19.jpg" style="width: 245px; height: 127px; float: left; margin-top: 12px; margin-bottom: 12px;" /></a>We know that it's become <em>all too easy</em> to assume that the PlayStation Network is getting hacked again whenever it goes down. That said, consider this another heads-up in long line of previous friendly reminders: Since being postponed last Thursday, Sony's announced that the PSN will go down for "significant maintenance" tomorrow, March 4th starting at <strike>2 </strike>3 PM EST until approx 5 AM on Monday, March 5th. Unlike <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/psa-playstation-network-goes-down-from-9am-et-schedule-maintenance/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">February's fixin'</a>, you'll still be booted offline even if you've logged-in with your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/05/playstation-network-becomes-sony-entertainment-network-feb-7th/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">SEN ID</a> prior to the scheduled maintenance window. This means you won't be able to hop into a game of Domination on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Modern+Warfare+3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>MW3</em></a>, along with being restricted from accessing your account, the PlayStation Store, Home etc., as per usual. You can stay glued to PlayStation on Twitter to get the official word on when everything's back up, but may we suggest it could be a good chance for a lazy Sunday stroll? Hey, consider it an excuse to try out Near if you were one of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/28/sony-updates-ps-vita-sales-figures-over-1-2-million-units-worl/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">1.2 million</a> to snag yourself a PS Vita -- oh wait, that requires being logged into the PSN, too. Sigh.

Besides, it was never compatible with US-registered Vitas in the first place. Nevertheless, if you happen to have bought this old PSP title for your Vita already, then this may just work. Hacker Wololo claims that later today he'll release Vita Half Byte Loader files, which will give you a "limited PSP homebrew experience" on your lovely new handheld -- and indeed we've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/playstation-vita-shown-running-sega-genesis-titles-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">already seen</a> it playing Sega Genesis titles. The hack supposedly uses an exploit in this particular Motorstorm title -- but since Sony is already on VHBL's tracks, who knows if it'll really work or how long it'll last? Video evidence after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks, Patrick]

It should: that's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayStationVita/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita</a>, Sony's up-and-coming challenger to the mobile gaming throne. After a strong start in its homeland (followed by a quick <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/29/the-morning-after-playstation-vita-sales-go-cold-during-first-f/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">holiday slump</a>), the budding portable hit the books, brushed up on its English and barreled its way back into Engadget's game room, <em>demanding</em> another review. And why not? We're happy to oblige.<br /> <br /> And here it is, an extremely familiar looking slab of plastic, glass and electronics that calls itself the North American 3G / WiFi PlayStation Vita. Sony's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/09/sony-answers-more-playstation-vita-questions-no-to-video-output/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">region-free</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/23/playstation-3-to-ship-region-free/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">tradition</a> ensures that it won't be <em>too</em> different than Japan's native model, but we're diving in for a more detailed look anyway. Read on for a peek at its content management system, backward compatibility, the particulars of its fancy new thumbsticks, the latest <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCEQqQIwAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget%2F2012%2F02%2F06%2Fsony-announces-firmware-update-for-ps-vita-maps-and-video-apps%2F&amp;ei=o7Q0T8KtEvTUiALAltnHCg&amp;usg=AFQjCNEi1irL6YkWPd1v4heapp0wQQnGfA">firmware update's</a> contribution to the platform and much more.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/4813808?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/vita-hardware8838102-1329089253_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/4813807?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/vita-hardware8838109-1329089239_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/4813806?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/vita-hardware8838115-1329089229_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/4813804?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/vita-hardware8838121-1329089207_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review-0/4813803?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/vita-hardware8838123-1329089199_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

It wasn't a <em>total</em> surprise, since he'd ordered one from Amazon, but what's weird is just how soon it arrived -- the early-bird First Edition doesn't launch until February 15th and the general release is a whole week after that. We're not sure what Graham did to deserve this, but we do know from our <em>Joystiq</em> buddies that he's not the only one -- Amazon.ca has apparently sent out a few of these premature parcels. If the injustice burns, console yourself with the thought that Graham and his blessed compatriots probably can't access the store to download any games.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Graham emailed again. He has store access. He has games. Joyousness.

Sony Computer Entertainment International has announced that, as of February 7th, PSN IDs will change into SEN IDs as a part of its existing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sonyentertainmentnetwork?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony Entertainment Network</a> The company has aimed the move at clearly unifying the services of PSN and SEN, such as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/music+unlimited?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Music Unlimited</a>. Fret not, however, as <em>Joystiq</em> notes that the change is basically a looks-only affair, meaning your current account information and related services will remain the same. Notably, the moniker refresh won't apply to the PSP, which will curiously remain under the PSN moniker for network services. The news comes as a part of SCEI's updated Terms of Service and privacy policy, both of which take effect on the same day. Those changes, by the way, appear to mainly be regarding location-based services for PS Vita, and parental controls for sub-master accounts. After all of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/01/sonys-kaz-hirai-will-address-playstation-network-hack-at-1am-et/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">bad times</a> PSN has been through, partnering up closer to SEN might just be the refreshed outlook on (online) life it needed all along -- and hopefully with less <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/02/psa-playstation-network-goes-down-from-9am-et-schedule-maintenance/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">downtime</a>. Hit up the source link below for the full details.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We've adjusted the post to clarify that the PlayStation Network will remain named as such, but that PSN IDs have now become SEN IDs.

The network will be experiencing a temporary outage today to make room for "routine scheduled maintenance" starting at 11AM ET and ending at approximately midnight. As usual in these scenarios, you won't have access to any PlayStation services on your PS3 or PSP, including PlayStation Home and Sony's Music and Video Unlimited offerings. That said, if you were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/cta-digital-us-army-accessories/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">shootin' and slashin'</a> fools before the downtime, you should have no hassle continuing with your current session -- though access to any of the aforementioned services is still out of the question. Desperate to know <em>exactly</em> when the PSN will be back up and running? Keep it locked on the Playstation Twitter feed to find out.

After introducing the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/playstation-vita-review-japanese-edition/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PS Vita</a> early in December, the company managed to shift about 500,000 units in its own backyard, while ageing predecessor, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psp/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP</a>, continued to sell 1.6 million units worldwide. Not to be outdone, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/27/playstation-3-slim-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PS3</a> nearly broached the 4 million mark, bringing Sony closer to its fiscal year-end goal of 15 million for the five-year old gaming powerhouse. The system's motion control add-on, Move, also moved a considerable 1.7 million units, with the PS2 still puttering along and enjoying "robust sales in emerging countries." Brand equity? Sony's got it in spades.

Still mulling whether or not to pick yourself up a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/playstation-vita-review-japanese-edition/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita</a>? Obsessed with retro gaming titles? If you answered "yes" to both, you should probably start socking away a few extra coins, buster. YouTube user frwololo has just upped a video showcasing the Half Byte Loader running the Picodrive emulator on Sony's PS Vita -- the first major proof that this kind of wizardry is indeed a possibility. The nuts and bolts of how it happened are being kept under wraps for now, and he seems certain that Sony's inbuilt security will make the mod unusable as soon as it's released. That said, there's still a lot of hope to be found in the clip just after the break, and c'mon -- who doesn't need a little hope to kick off a year where we're all supposed to perish?

<p style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/21/playstation-vita-review-japanese-edition/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitashotsfrontvitamat600.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></p><p> It's hard to believe that Sony's venerable first portable has just reached its seventh birthday. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/12/20/sony-playstation-portable-psp-hands-on-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP</a> launched in 2004: a year when the Motorola RAZR V3 claimed top phone prizes and tablets were called tablet <em>PCs</em>. Since then, its closest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ds/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">rival</a> has undergone several substantial transformations, but the PSP has remained largely untouched, aside from getting a little <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/20/psp-3000-unboxing-and-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">slimmer</a>. Sony's hoping its new portable superstar is less evolutionary, more revolutionary. And it may have to be. Mobile gaming is snapping at its heels, with game developers continuing to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/10/app-review-infinity-blade-2-ios/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">boost</a> the scale and polish on smartphone offerings. Even Sony has been attempting to get in on the mobile action, with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/28/sony-ericsson-xperia-play-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">underwhelming</a> results so far.<br /> <br /> So here's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlaystationVita/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita</a>, attempting to breath new life into the portable gaming market. There's no 3D screen, it doesn't do phone calls (although our test model is the 3G-connected variant) but there is, however, a load of power underneath that 5-inch OLED hood. It looks to be the answer to more "traditional" gamers' prayers, but there are plenty of questions we've been itching to answer. Is a portable gaming console still a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/15/console-vs-pc-redux-how-mobile-gaming-will-reshape-the-industr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">valid gaming option</a>? How long will the battery last? What's that rear touchscreen all about? Read on and see how Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/the-sony-psp2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">next-generation portable</a> stacks up. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sony PlayStation Vita review (Japanese edition)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/4692693?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitadsc2338mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/4691659?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitadsc2276mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/4691668?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitadsc2248mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/4691661?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitadsc2275mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/playstation-vita-review/4691664?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/12/vitadsc2272mat800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

An updated page from the PS Vita's Japanese site has backed up rumors that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/psone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSOne</a> Classics and other "archive games" won't be available when the quad-core console arrives in Asian stores next month. However, it's not all bad news for anyone hoping to relive those jaggy-edged gaming triumphs of the late 90's -- the official response adds that plans for older titles will be announced in due course.</p>

When Sony mentioned that the Vita wouldn't support the PSP's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/the-sony-psp2/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">existing UMD library</a>, we had to wonder what would become of the little discs. Sony hinted that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/14/sony-announces-bucketload-of-playstation-vita-launch-games-teas/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">something was on the way</a> for physical media aficionados at TGS, but wasn't ready to go into detail yet. Today, however, SCEJ announced the UMD Passport program -- a service that will let Japanese PSP owners register UMD games through a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PSP</a> app to secure discounts for repurchasing titles on the new console. The discounted games average between &yen;500-1,000 (about $6 and $13, respectively) a pop, but can go for as high as &yen;2,400. The UMD registration app hits the Japanese PlayStation store on December 6th, and Sony hopes to make the system compatible with roughly 200 titles. Hit the source links below for Sony's official press release and an initial list of Passport compatible games, in Japanese, of course.

The last time we reported on these figures, paid iOS and Android games were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/18/ios-and-android-continue-chipping-away-at-mobile-gaming-market/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">chipping away</a> happily at the US market share of those two old oaks, Sony and Nintendo. Well, peer through the cloud of leaves and sawdust and you'll see that the job is done: the two newcomers will generate $500 million more than DS and PSP titles this year, according to stats from Flurry. Click past the break to see the trend since 2009 crystallized into a cold, hard pie chart.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, there's a bit of good news for everybody: the overall American mobile gaming market is growing at a rapid pace -- this year's total revenue of $3.3 billion represents a 25 percent increase on 2010, so new devices like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vita?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">PlayStation Vita</a> and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/09/transformer-prime-detailed-10-inch-super-ips-display-12-hour/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Transformer Prime</a> should find plenty of room to take seed.
