Keeping on that 1980's near-future vibe (but with a slightly more sentient twist), this week we check out Michael Crichton's <span style="font-style: italic;">Runaway</span>, starring Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, Cynthia Rhodes and Kirstie Alley. Filled with circuitry and hardwired chips, the movie reinforces wholesome family values by featuring warranty voids as the gateway hack to murder. <br /><br />

<br /> <strong>Leaping Insect Robot</strong><br /><br /> Measuring in around the size of a human head, these six-legged, spider-like, autonomous robots are mechanical in movement but shockingly precise in killing prey. The autonomous insects have the ability to propel themselves up to seven feet in the air, allowing for attacks on unsuspecting victims. Dual-functioning, the legs are able to crawl and grasp a multitude of surfaces, albeit awkwardly and rather slowly. After programming targets into a mainframe, the robots are able to identify and kill victims by injecting them with acid via a probe before short circuiting and eventually exploding into a ball of flames. Sadly, the robots lack any sort of remote control, making human errors in target-programming unable to be edited.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/movie-gadget-friday-runaway/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Movie Gadget Friday: Runaway</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/movie-gadget-friday-runaway/">Movie Gadget Friday: Runaway</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 13:08:00 EST. We must have missed the memo explaining the world's growing problem of ignoring their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=alarm+clock">alarm clocks</a>, but on second thought, maybe it's just time (ahem) for manufacturers to crank out solutions to the issue that has quietly been around for centuries. Not too long after the ever-mischievous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/26/buzzing-copter-inspired-blowfly-alarm-clock-goes-on-sale/">Blowfly hit the market</a> to force drowsy individuals to rise and shine, Nanda Home is offering up the rugged (and oh-so-devious) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/15/clocky-hides-when-you-hit-snooze/">Clocky</a> to those who are ready to deal with their addiction to snooze. Ready to roll in almond white, aqua, and mint colors, this dual-wheeled alarm clock gives users just one free round of snooze before it darts around the room, blaring its alarm and zooming across floors until the exhausted owner manages to locate, load, and fire his / her shotgun at the free-spirited toy. Watch out, though, as this bugger can even leap from three-foot heights without missing a tick, and it's finally ready to shake up your morning routine for a relatively modest $49.99.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2007/03/clocky-the-runaway-alarm-clock-is-now-available-for-purchase.html">GadgetReview</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/household/" rel="tag">Household</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/devious-clocky-hits-the-market-ready-to-roll/">Devious Clocky hits the market, ready to roll</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 15:09:00 EST. Never mind those fancy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/18/samsung-plans-fuel-cell-powered-cellphones/">fuel cells</a> -- just knock that phone around a bit to keep it juiced. At least that's the idea with three new concept handsets introduced by France-based ModeLabs, the same company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/20/levis-to-make-jump-from-jeans-to-phones/">hooking up with Levi's</a> (to produce phones with decidedly less fancy recharging technology and more denim, we imagine). First up is the aptly named "YoYo," a puck-shaped device (pictured) designed to be worn around the neck that draws power from a combination of solar cells and the user's movement. Next up, the "U-Turn" somehow managed to eke out some electrons from the opening and closing of its keyboard, while the fitness-themed "Runaway" gets regenerated while strapped to the wrist. Of course, none of these are anywhere near production, but the folks at ModeLabs are apparently gunning to market the technology to manufacturers before too long.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.textually.org/textually/archives/2006/12/014426.htm">textually.org</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/21/phone-or-yo-yo-modelabs-unveils-new-concepts/">Phone or yo-yo? Australia is featured this week and should be excellent. The World Series continues on Fox, while Sunday Night Football takes the night off, but a min-marathon of Heroes takes its place. If you're looking for Runaway on The CW...don't, it's <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/2006/10/18/the-cw-cancels-runaway/">been cancelled</a>. Finally, don't forget tonight is the premiere of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/20/inhds-mojo-adding-wall-street-warriors-october-22nd/">Wall Street Warriors</a> on INHD's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/14/inhd-introduces-mojo-tv-lineup-for-adventurous-men/">Mojo</a> lineup.<br /><br />Our traditional high-def listings continue below.<br /><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/22/hdtv-listings-for-october-22-2006/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HDTV Listings for October 22, 2006</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/abc/" rel="tag">ABC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cbs/" rel="tag">CBS</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/the-cw/" rel="tag">The CW</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/discovery-hd/" rel="tag">Discovery-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/espn-hd/" rel="tag">ESPN-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hbo-hd/" rel="tag">HBO-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdnet/" rel="tag">HDNet</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/mojo/" rel="tag">MOJO</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/mynetworktv/" rel="tag">MyNetworkTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/nbc/" rel="tag">NBC</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/showtime-hd/" rel="tag">Showtime-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/starz/" rel="tag">Starz</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/tnt-hd/" rel="tag">TNT-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/universal-hd/" rel="tag">Universal-HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/listings/" rel="tag">Listings</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/22/hdtv-listings-for-october-22-2006/">HDTV Listings for October 22, 2006</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 22 Oct 2006 15:22:00 EST. Also airing for the first time is Heroes on NBC, as everyday people gain supernatural powers. Slightly less fantastic but still extraodinary is the return of the NFL to New Orleans, with the Saints home opener vs. Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip received good reviews for its premiere episode and is back with number two, along with the whole CBS lineup bookended by new comedy The Class and CSI: Miami.
